VECTOR CONTROL OPERATOR


GENERAL DEFINITION

This is rodent and pest control work driving and operating vector control vehicles and equipment as part of a rodent and insect abatement program. An employee in this class is responsible for the mixing of pesticides and for the operation of specially equipped light trucks that use pesticides and for the operation of specially equipped light trucks that use pesticides in spraying and fogging operations.

Work is performed under the supervision of a group leader. Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of equipment. Work involves conditions which can only be partially controlled.


TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

Acts as a lead worker in a small crew engaged in insect abatement activities in an assigned section of the City; determines which type and mixture of pesticides are needed; mixes the pesticides determined to be necessary in the correct proportion.

Operates trucks for purposes such as spreading insecticides on ponds, streams, wooded areas, parks and other locations; drives along streets while worker operates spray, fogging or dusting machine mounted on trucks; helps load and unload trucks.

Washes and services trucks with water, gas, and oil; observes instruments while vehicle is in operation and takes routine corrective measures if malfunction is indicated; performs first echelon maintenance.

Checks for signs of rodent and insect infestation; places bait in likely areas; sprays or fogs if insects are found; places packets of poison in sewers to control rodents.

Fills out a variety of reports concerning completed jobs.

Performs related work as required.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to the scheduled examination and during tenure of employment in the class.

Possession of a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator Certificate as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at the time of application.
