INTERCEPTOR SERVICES WORKER 2
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is semiskilled work inspecting, maintaining and performing minor repairs to wastewater interceptor control chambers and related control devices usually in an assigned district. Supervising a limited number of semiskilled workers who perform manual tasks is a significant aspect of the work. The employee works under the close supervision of a technical superior.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Receives assignment sheet listing wastewater interceptors requiring maintenance and/or repair; keeps record of work performed, materials used; inspects crew truck to ensure that required work tools, protective clothing and safety apparatus are accounted for and in working condition.
Operates truck to transport crew and equipment to interceptor chambers in an assigned district, using the assignment sheet as a guide.
Instructs crew on placement of warning flags and cones, and safety barriers around manhole covers.
Uses approved testing equipment to check for presence of explosive and/or poisonous gases, and of sufficient oxygen in chambers and sewers; removes manhole cover and allows chamber to ventilate; inserts portable blower into interceptor chamber to dissipate dangerous gas; uses air masks, breathing packs and other safety equipment when preparing to enter chamber; instructs subordinates in the use of safety equipment and confined space entry procedures.
Enters sewer and inspects tide gate to ensure that it is properly seated; observes wastewater interceptor control devices in operation including gates, valves, hydraulic cylinders, floats and pumps to ascertain their working order.
Lubricates interceptor control devices; cleans debris from sluice gate and discharge pipe; uses hand tools to make minor repairs such as repacking hydraulic cylinders, adjusting tide gates and replacing broken chains in both chambers and tide gates; uses powered chain saw to cut up timbers blocking the regulating chamber or tide gate.
Supervises a small crew of semiskilled workers, engaged in setting up barricades around work sites, cleaning debris from grates in siphons and pump stations, and hosing down the walls and floors of pump stations.
Prepares written inspection reports.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
• the tools, materials, equipment and practices used in the maintenance and minor repair of manually, mechanically and hydraulically operated wastewater interceptor regulators and related appurtenances
• the hazards involved and safety measures to be observed in performing interceptor maintenance
· Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) laws and Philadelphia Water Department regulations for elimination of wastewater discharges.
ABILITY TO:
• make inspections of interceptor chambers
• use hand and power tools employed in making minor repairs to interceptor regulators and related appurtenances
• assign and review the work of a small group of unskilled workers
• understand and follow oral and written instructions
• perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in confined and water filled chambers
• enter openings no larger than thirty inches in diameter
• prepare written inspection reports and maintain records
· learn to utilize mobile computer devices to complete work orders
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 8/15.)
EDUCATION:
Education equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade.
AND
EXPERIENCE:
One year of experience as an Interceptor Services Worker 1 performing semi-skilled and manual work in the maintenance and repair of wastewater interceptor chambers and related appurtenances.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to meet the physical and medical standards approved for this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as an Interceptor Services Worker 2.
