SEWER MAINTENANCE CREW CHIEF 1


GENERAL DEFINITION

  This is maintenance and repair work at the group leader level. Work includes responsibility for supervising the work of a small crew engaged in the various aspects of a citywide program designed to repair and maintain the City's sewer system. Assignments may be performed outside of regularly scheduled working hours. The employee participates with other group leaders in the implementation of a citywide maintenance and repair program. Work involves conditions, which can be only partially controlled due to outside environment and sewer conditions. Light physical effort may be required. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher-level supervisor.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

  Keeps records of work performed, materials used, and employees' time; makes rough sketches of locations requiring work; makes simple oral and written reports on condition of structures which have been reported for repair or maintenance.

  Examines sewers and related areas and indicates proper location and depth for workmen to dig ditches; watches for indication of other utility structures and the need for shoring materials in the ditch; explains to workers the location and type of repairs to be made to various sewer structures; instructs sewer crawler to examine, and report condition of sewer structures; may make visual inspection of sewer interior; estimates and requisitions materials and equipment necessary to complete repairs.

  Determines that safety measures have been taken by inspecting for the ditch sheathing and shoring, the precautionary measures taken to prevent injury from utility power cables and transmission lines; the absence of poisonous sewer gases and surface traffic controls.

  Investigates complaints of sewer water in cellars and public utility subsurface spaces; orders the inspection of sewer laterals and main sewers connecting to dwellings or found near public utility structures for possible sources of sewer water seepage; determines and initiates needed repairs.

  Performs related work as required.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

Vision - Bilateral vision. Normal depth perception

Ability to meet other physical and medical standards approved for this class.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Sewer Maintenance Crew Chief 1.
