WATER MAIN EQUIPMENT MECHANIC
GENERAL
DEFINITION
This is semi-skilled work in the maintenance and operation
of a variety of specialized
pieces of equipment used in tapping and cutting water mains. An employee in this class
provides specialized water main equipment support to the maintenance and repair field crews
requiring water main tapping and cutting operations or the connection and/or operation of large
pumps. Work includes the provision of preventive maintenance repair to various power driven
water main tapping and pipe cutting equipment, blowers, pumps, generators, and responsibility
for issuing and maintaining written and physical inventory or spare and replacement specialized
water distribution equipment pieces. Work is performed under the direction of an administrative
supervisor.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK
(ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Positions, connects and operates air and/or hydraulic compressor powered water main
tapping machines used for cutting into pipe without service interruption; positions and operates
hydraulic power saws to cut cast iron or steel water mains; operates small gasoline powered
electric generators, water pumps and blowers used to provide access to problem areas or for the
safety of water main repair workers; positions, connects, adjusts, lubricates and operates large
gasoline and/or diesel powered pumping units.
- Disassembles, cleans and replaces work and damaged parts such as gaskets, bearings, and
water seals as preventive maintenance; performs minor repair of specialized power driven
equipment.
- Cleans, fuels, lubricates, adjusts and makes minor repairs to hydraulic, air compressor
and gasoline powered pumps, generators, blowers, saws and tapping machines.
- Loads required equipment onto, and operates a truck to transport equipment to work
sites; unloads and sets up equipment at the worksite; performs related laboring tasks.
- Issues and maintains written and physical inventory of spare and replacement pieces of
specialized water distribution equipment. Provides special cutting and tapping services for
private contractors; cuts six inch diameter pipe for water distribution stock reserves.
- Makes routine reports to dispatcher on completed work.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS
AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the methods, practices, materials and tools used in the maintenance of machineries, and
generators and hydraulic, air compressor and gasoline powered devices.
- the occupational hazard and safety precautions involved in the maintenance of mechanical
equipment.
- the operation of tapping machines and saws used for cutting large diameter pipes.
ABILITY TO:
- learn the operation of a variety of power driven equipment commonly used in routine
and
emergency repair of water mains.
- learn the methods, materials, tools and practices used in the installation, maintenance and
repair of water distribution systems.
- maintain and repair various types of equipment used in the work.
- understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- prepare simple reports of work performed.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING
AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement
represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based
on training and experience requirements as approved on 4/89.)
- Education equivalent to the completion of the eighth school grade.
- Three years of experience in the repair and maintenance of machines and mechanical
devices, one year of which has been above the helper level working with tapping machines and
saws used for cutting large diameter pipe.
Or any equivalent combination of training and experience determined to be acceptable
by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions
required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Water Main Equipment Mechanic.
