WATER DISTRIBUTION REPAIR WORKER
GENERAL
DEFINITION
This is field water distribution repair and maintenance work at the full performance level.
Incumbents perform a variety of assignments required by the repair and maintenance of water
mains and equipment. Employees in this class may work evening, weekends, and holidays as
assignments require. Work is performed under the close supervision of field crew chiefs. An
employee in this class performs firstline repair and maintenance of segments of the city-wide
water distribution system. Work involves the exertion of moderate physical effort under
conditions which can be only partially controlled.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK
(ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Installs sections of new water mains; locates and repairs leaks and breaks in piping;
caulks pipe joints with packing and hot lead or straps a metal band around joint to prevent
leakage.
< li> Installs ferrules or valved sleeves in water mains using a manually or electrically
operated
ferrule installation machine.
- Installs, tests, repairs and repacks water valves on water mains udder or with out pressure
using hand tools; assists in flow studies by drilling taps and inserting gauges.
- Installs, repairs and maintains fire hydrants using hand tools.
- May drive a truck to and from work areas.
- May supervise a small crew of employees consisting of an equipment operator, laborers
and/or helpers.
- Operates air-driven tools, such as a pneumatic drill to break had ground surfaces; digs
and backfills dirt in work area.
- Distributes tools to crew members and insures that tools and equipment are properly
cared for and returned to the vehicle at the end of each repair task.
- May notify customers of possible shutdowns or disruptions of service.
- Performs related work as required.

AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:

maintenance of water mains and equipment.
- the care and use of tools used in the work.

parts.

the installation, repair and maintenance of water mains and equipment.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING
AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement
represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based
on training and experience requirements as approved on 3/72.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade.
- Two years of recent field laboring experience in the installation, repair or maintenance
of water or gas distribution mains and equipment, one year of which has been above the
laborer level.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable
by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Water Distribution Repair Worker if required by work assignment.
