This is semiskilled work assisting a higher level repair worker in various aspects of water operations repair and maintenance. An employee in this class assists in the performance of first-line maintenance and repair of segments of city-wide water operations systems. Work involves conditions which can be only partially controlled, and strenuous physical effort must be exerted in the performance of duties. Employees in this class may be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as assignments require. Work is performed under the close supervision of a technical supervisor.
Breaks street surfaces with a pneumatic drill; spades dirt with a shovel to reach damaged water distribution area and clears the damaged area of all obstacles; hands repair worker needed tools, supplies and materials and assists him or her as necessary during the actual repair work to receive the training required to qualify for water operations repair worker or an equivalent class; backfills holes with dirt and tamps for levelness; sweeps work area with a broom and assists in the loading and unloading of all supplies, materials and equipment; may notify customers of possible shutdowns or disruption of service.
Enters interceptor chambers, siphon valve chambers, wet wells and the attached sewers under the direction of a supervisor or lead worker; assists in the performance of maintenance and repairs; removes debris, greases fittings, and lubricates control devices.
Learns to uses hand tools and power equipment to make repairs such as replacing broken chains, adjusting tide gates and breaking up large items blocking wastewater flow; assists in the use of manual, hydraulic, and mechanically operated sewer and wet well cleaning equipment.
Performs related work as required.
Education equivalent to the completion of the eighth school grade.
ANDOne year of recent field laboring experience.
Note: Completion of a City of Philadelphia approved training program in the use of small hand tools and the operation of the pneumatic drill may be substituted for the one year of laboring experience requirement.
