VECTOR CONTROL CREW CHIEF

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

            This is second level supervisory work directing a year-round city-wide vector control program, supplemented during the summer months by an intensified program for the control of mosquitoes and other insects.  Work involves supervision over a number of small work crews and is performed under the supervision of a technical superior.  Work involves disagreeable aspects and light physical exertion.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

            Plans, assigns, and reviews the work of a number of two or three-person-crews engaged in a rodent and insect environmental abatement program; receives and logs rodent and other vector complaints; assigns crews to sites to lay traps and poison bait; assigns crews engaged in spraying and fogging sites for the control of mosquitoes and other insects; sets up schedule for and monitors completed work of a year-round city-wide mosquito control program.

            Supervises the work of fieldhouse workers engaged in varied aspects of vector control work which includes feeding and monitoring the behavior of rodents and other animals; oversees the preparation of insecticides and rodenticides ensuring that the proper formulas are used; supervises the testing of rodenticides; reviews test results evaluating the effectiveness of poisons used.

            Makes field visits to sites to inspect work on crews while in progress and upon completion; instructs crews in proper manner of laying baits; trains subordinates in safety precautions to be observed in handling poisonous materials; maintains records of areas serviced and prepares periodic reports; assigns and maintains a variety of vehicles; requisitions supplies and equipment.

            Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

•           the methods, practices, materials, and equipment used in the control of rodents, insects and various other vectors

•           the uses, dangers, and safety precautions necessary in the handling of rodenticides and insecticides

•           supervisory methods and techniques

 

ABILITY TO:

 

•           recognize, locate, and identify the source of rodents, insects, and other vectors

•           operate a variety of sprayers and fog applicators used to control insects and to determine proper mixtures of insecticides

•           maintain records and prepare reports

·                     direct a year-round city-wide vector control program

·                     establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 9/18.)

 

EDUCATION:

 

            Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.

           

AND

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:

 

            Two years of experience in a vector abatement program.

 

AND

SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE

 

            One year of experience in vector control as a lead worker conducting vector inspections or as a lead worker engaging in rodent and insect abatement.

 

OR

 

            One year of experience supervising and participating in the work of a small crew engaged in rodent and insect abatement.

 

OR

 

            Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

            Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

 

            Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Vector Control Crew Chief.
