VECTOR CONTROL WORKER 2

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

            This is pest control work as part of a rodent and insect environmental abatement program.  An employee in this class supervises a small group of employees performing vector control duties, and frequently participates in the work performed; or drives and operates vector control vehicles and equipment, and is responsible for the mixing of pesticides and for the operation of specially equipped light trucks that use pesticides in spraying and fogging operations. Work requires moderate physical effort and involves some disagreeable conditions which can only be partially controlled.  Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of equipment.  Work is performed under the supervision of a technical superior or group leader, depending on assignment.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

SUPERVISORY ASSIGNMENT:

 

             Assigns, supervises, and participates in the work of a small crew engaged in rodent and insect abatement activities in an assigned section of the city.            Drives crew to work location in single chassis vehicles.

             Uses manually operated vector control equipment such as hand sprayer and a portable fogger.

            May drive and operate the more complex vector control equipment.

            Places poles around vacant lots to prevent the deposit and buildup of debris that could harbor rodents.

           

OPERATOR ASSIGNMENT:

 

            Acts as a lead worker in a small crew engaged in rodent and insect abatement activities in an assigned section of the city.

            Operates trucks for purposes such as spreading insecticides on ponds, streams, wooded areas, parks and other locations; drives along streets while worker operates spray, fogging or dusting machine mounted on trucks; helps load and unload trucks.

            Washes and services trucks with water, gas, and oil; observes instruments while vehicle is in operation and takes routine corrective measures if malfunction is indicated; performs first echelon maintenance.

 

BOTH ASSIGNMENTS:

 

            Determines what equipment will be necessary for specific vector control duties; determines which type and mixture of chemicals and poison would be most effective for a given job; mixes the poisons determined to be necessary in the correct proportions.

            Inspects homes, abandoned houses, and businesses for signs of rodents and insect infestations; places bait in likely areas; sprays or fogs if insects are found; places packets of poison in sewers to control rodents.

            Fills out a variety of reports concerning completed jobs.         

            Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

·         the methods, equipment, and practices of laboring operations used in rodent and insect control programs.

·         the methods and equipment used in mixing and preparing pesticides or poisons.

·         what pesticides or poisons are required for different vector control situations, and their proper usage.

·         the dangers, risks, and safety procedures necessary in the handling of pesticides or poisons.

·         the safety procedures and health hazards in abatement activities relating to rodents and inspections.

·         abatement methods and functions relating to vectors such as bats and birds.

 

ABILITY TO:

 

·         assign and supervise the work of a small group of employees in vector control work; and to drive a single chassis vehicle, if required by assignment.

·         drive, operate, and maintain vector control vehicles and equipment, if required by assignment.

·         understand and follow oral and written instructions, and to ascertain facts through field investigation and inspections.

·         perform a variety of manual labor tasks, including when exposed to adverse weather conditions.

·         establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 2/84.)

 

EDUCATION:

 

            Education equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade.

AND

 

EXPERIENCE:

 

            Two years of experience in a vector control work program, which has included the preparation and application of pesticides. 

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

            Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

 

            Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Vector Control Worker 2, if required by work assignment. 

            Possession of a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator Certificate as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at the time of application and appointment and during tenure of employment as a Vector Control Worker 2, if required by work assignment.
