GENERAL DEFINITION
This is pest control work performed as part of a rodent and insect abatement program. An employee in this class places poisonous bait, applies insecticides, and operates small power operated equipment. Work requires moderate physical effort and involves some disagreeable aspects. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a higher level vector control worker.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Assists superior in preparing proper mixture of pesticide; prepares packets of rodent bait; fills tanks on various pieces of equipment with pesticides.
Places bait in likely areas; sprays or fogs if insects are found; places pesticide in sewers to control public health pests.
Uses manually operated vector control equipment such as, a hand sprayer and a portable fogger; assists in the operation of large insecticide spraying and fogging equipment; drives automobiles, vans, light trucks and other single chassis vehicles, if required by work assignment.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
• the methods, equipment, and practices of laboring operations used in rodent and insect control programs
• the safety precautions and health hazards in abatement practices relating to rodents and insects
• the methods and equipment used in mixing and preparing pesticides and rodenticides
• abatement methods and practices relating to vectors such as bats and birds
ABILITY TO:
• drive signal chassis vehicles
• understand and follow oral instructions
• perform a variety of manual tasks under occasionally adverse weather conditions
• establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 5/22.)
EDUCATION:
Education equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade.
AND
CERTIFICATION:
Certification as a Pesticide Applicator as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
EXPERIENCE:
Six months of general laboring experience in a vector or a pest control program.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
Possession of a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator Certificate as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at the time of appointment and during tenure of employment, as a Vector Control Worker 1.
Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Vector Control Worker I if required by job assignment, for all employees hired after March 1, 1993.
