LABOR CREW CHIEF II
GENERAL
DEFINITION
This is laboring supervision work at the second supervisory level with employees in this
class having responsibility for laboring activities in a large area or large district of the city or
a functional responsibility for a single laboring operation on a city-wide basis. Work includes
giving instructions and directions to a number of subordinate crew chiefs, planning daily work
assignments, making frequent trips to work locations to see that work standards are being met
and proper supervision is given. A significant aspect of the work is supervising subordinate
level crew chiefs in charge of crews.
Work is performed under general supervision of a maintenance superior. Assignments
are stable and are performed in accordance with laboring standards and well defined policies.
Employees in this class participate in a city-wide laboring operation. Work involves some
disagreeable aspects.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK
(ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Lays out work assignments; gives special and continuing instructions to crew chiefs;
visits work sites to see that crew chiefs are exercising adequate supervision and that work meets
standards; handles the training of new employees.
- Ascertains needs and orders materials, equipment and supplies; approves requisitions
for
material and equipment; assigns and reassigns laborers to cover for absences, emergencies and
the like; reviews work and employee time and performance reports; resolves minor disciplinary
problems.
- Reviews and follows-up on complaints.
- Checks and accounts for equipment and tools before and after use; prepares orders for
repair and maintenance of tools and equipment; maintains inventory and time records.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS
AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- tools and equipment, and materials and supplies used in general laboring operations.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING
AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement
represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the tenth school grade.
- Four years of general laboring experience, two years of which shall have been
supervising laboring operation crew activities.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions
required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Labor Crew Chief II if required for work assignment.
