LABOR CREW SUB-CHIEF
GENERAL
DEFINITION
This is supervisory and manual work in general laboring operations.
Employees in this class supervise relatively small groups of employees performing
manual duties and frequently participate in the work performed. Work involved is routine,
repetitive, often requiring physical exertion and may involve operation of a truck. Employees
have limited opportunity for independent judgement and decision. Specific work or route
assignments are received from a higher level crew chief, and work is inspected frequently for
completeness and adherence to schedules.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK
(ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Assigns and supervises the work of groups of street sweepers engaged in cleaning streets
and alleys in a designated district; checks routes after completion to observe quality of work
done.
- Assigns and supervises the work of laborers engaged in removing debris from inlets
and
in the performance of various other routine laboring jobs.
- Assigns, supervises, and participates in the work of a crew engaged in the repair,
erection or removal of street signs and poles; pours concrete; affixes guy lines and anchor bolts.
- Assigns, supervises, and participates in the work of a crew engaged in painting guide
lines and letters on street surfaces; operates paint machines and performs routine hand and spray
painting.
- Assigns, supervises, and frequently participates in the work of laborers engaged in the
preservation and maintenance of city park areas; does routine gardening work, operates light
truck as necessary to transport employees and equipment, and operates common park equipment.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS
AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the standard tools and practices used in general labor operations
ABILITY TO:
- assign and supervise the work of a small group of street sweepers, laborers, and
equipment operators.
- understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- perform a variety of manual tasks.
- drive a single chassis truck if required by assignment.
- perform heavy manual labor for extended periods under adverse weather conditions.
- obtain a valid automobile operator's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
if required by work assignment.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING
AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement
represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests.)
- One year of experience in general laboring operations.
- Ability to read and write English.
Or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions
required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a
Labor Crew Sub-Chief if required by work assignment.
