INTERPRETER
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is specialized work in the interpretation of statements between two or more
persons conversing in English and a non-English language. The languages may involve
terminology or idiomatic expressions difficult to translate. Employees are able to
question the speaker on any point that is not understood. Work involves performing
routine clerical duties when not performing interpreting assignments. A significant aspect
of the work involves establishing effective working relationships and inspiring the
confidence of non-English speaking people. Work is performed under the supervision of
an administrative superior.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)
- The positions must be responsible for interpreting statements between two or more
persons conversing in English and a non-English language.
- The positions perform routine clerical duties when not performing interpreting
assignments.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Interprets statements between two or more persons conversing in English and a
non-English language; interprets questions asked of a non-English speaking person;
obtains the requested information and interprets this in English; reiterates certain points
if unsure whether audience fully understands the interpretation.
- Interprets written or spoken instructions for a non-English speaking person.
- Gives information in the designated non-English language to those inquiring about
activities and facilities which the city makes available to the public.
- Translates from English to the non-English language and vice versa, correspon-
dence to be sent to business firms and individuals; reviews written translations with other
interpreters to ensure accuracy.
- Files, answers telephones, and performs routine clerical duties.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the grammar and usage of the designated non-English language.
- English usage and grammar.
- the colloquialisms and idiomatic expressions of the designated non-English
language.
ABILITY TO:
- convey the appropriate information, questions, and instructions in a manner which
is understood by all persons involved.
- translate routine correspondence into the designated non-English language and
from the non-English language to English.
- perform routine clerical duties.
- establish effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement
represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit
or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be
reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 12/89.)
EDUCATION
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
EXPERIENCE
- One year of experience in interpreting for two or more persons conversing in
English and the designated non-English language.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be
acceptable by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
