METER READING SUPERVISOR II
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is second level supervisory work directing, through subordinate supervisors, a large staff
of field employees engaged in reading water meters of residential and commercial accounts. An
employee in this class is responsible for the water meter reading of two or more districts or the
commercial account schedule on an assigned shift. Work involves maintaining meter reading schedules
in the districts supervised and coordinating the addition of special reads and shutoff activities with
scheduled route activity. Supervision of subordinate meter reading supervisors is a significant duty of
the position. Work is performed under the supervision of the Meter Reading Operations Manager.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)
- The position must supervise, through subordinate supervisors, groups of water meter readers in
assigned districts on an assigned shift.
- The position must be located in the Water Revenue Bureau.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Confers with superior and other area supervisors in planning the standards, schedules and
priorities of meter reading activities; instructs subordinate district supervisors in proposed work standards
and schedules; offers advice and helps plan district operations with district supervisors; assigns and
coordinates special readings, shutoffs, and investigations resulting from complaints and requests for
information by customers; loads/downloads meter reading equipment; distributes daily workload to district
supervisors; may read meters for special accounts, settlement readings, or upon special request; spot
checks work being performed in the field; may supervise a field unit during absence of regular
supervisor; maintains custody and security of customer keys.
- Conducts training programs in meter reading activities, supervisory techniques and customer
relations for subordinates.
- Compiles reports based on individual reports of district supervisor and weekly summary report
of unit activities; resolves billing discrepancies with accounting section.
- Reviews reports such as work schedules and performance ratings before submission to Meter
Reading Operation Manager.
- Represents Meter Reading section at meetings with department officials and outside organizations.
- Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.
Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience
requirements as approved on 8/94.)
EDUCATION:
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
- Two years of field experience reading gas, electric or water meters for a public utility.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:
- One year of experience supervising the reading of gas, electric or water meters for a public
utility.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the
Personnel Department that has included the specific experience described above.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Meter Reading Supervisor II.
