MUNICIPAL GUARD SUPERVISOR


GENERAL DEFINITION

  This is supervisory protective and custodial work directing security and custodial services in one or more municipal buildings or facilities. An employee in this class supervises the work activities of a number of protective staff engaged in guarding and performing a variety of custodial duties in assigned building or facility. Work includes planning, assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate staff, and providing needed training. An employee in this class participates in a variety of assigned building or facility special programs/events. Contact with the general public and departmental staff regarding maintenance/security of assigned building or facility is significant to the work. Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative superior and involves some disagreeable conditions.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

  Plans and assigns the work of subordinate staff; prepares subordinates' weekly work schedules; designates subordinates' hours of work and specific custodial duties to be performed; ensures adequate staffing; approves sick leave and vacation; prepares subordinates' time sheets; arranges for duty coverage during emergencies and staff shortages.

  Evaluates the work of subordinate staff; tours assigned building or facility, inspecting subordinates' work in progress and after completion to assure compliance with building or facility safety/security rules and regulations.

  Provides staff with needed training; reviews incident reports written by subordinate staff; ensures that reports are prepared in accordance with guidelines provided; attends staff meetings and training seminars; points out problems and discrepancies in work; instructs staff on corrective measures; advises staff on new safety/security practices and procedures; prepares staff training manual; orients new staff.

  Supervises staff in the reporting of maintenance problems; notifies superiors of maintenance problems as necessary; prepares building service requests; submits requisitions for material supply; distributes supply to staff; directs maintenance crews to repair sites as necessary; ensures that repairs are performed in accordance with assigned building or facility safety/security rules and regulations.

  Participates in assigned building or facility special programs/events such as but not limited to snow removal, school programs, and opening or closing of a municipal building or facility; performs protective and custodial work as necessary; may participate in staff disciplinary hearing; may interview eligible candidates for the Municipal Guard class.

  Enters data into electronic database, utilizes a computer for typing, routine data entry, receiving computer-generated tasks, and preparing reports.

  Prepares overall unit activity records and reports; submits records and reports to superiors for review and approval.

  Performs related work as required.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Municipal Guard Supervisor.
