FIREARMS EXAMINER TRAINEE

GENERAL DEFINITION

This is training level work learning the methods and techniques involved in the examination, test firing, and comparison of a variety of firearms, weapons, cartridges, bullets and similar evidence in order to classify, match, and identify them.

As the training period progresses and instruction decreases, employees perform increasingly difficult and more responsible work approaching the full performance level.

Work is performed under the supervision of a technical firearms superior.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

Receives instructions in examining, classifying and/or comparing firearms and ammunition.

Receives instructions on how to check files to ascertain if recovered weapons have a previous record of being stolen or wanted as evidence.

Receives instructions in test firing weapons, in restoring by chemical etching process the identifying marks or numbers which have been removed or obliterated; in utilizing the comparison microscope, and in taking photographs of ammunition employing photomicrographic techniques.

Does extensive reading in professional journals and magazines.

Learns how to testify in court.

Prepares written reports of examinations of evidence.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE OF:

• the operation and handling of firearms and ammunition

• the makes, models, and characteristics of domestic and foreign firearms and ammunition

• federal, state and municipal laws governing firearms

ABILITY TO:

• learn the principles, practices, materials, and equipment used in firearms and ammunition

• maintain an effective working relationship with the public and associates

• fire a variety of weapons safely

• understand and follow oral and written instructions

• maintain records and prepare reports

• learn to testify effectively in court

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 5/84.)

EDUCATION:

Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.

AND

EXPERIENCE:

Two years experience in any of the following activities; identifying, classifying, repairing and assembling firearms, or identifying ammunition.

OR

Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources, which has included education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade as an educational minimum.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid permit to carry a firearm issued by the Department of Licenses and Inspections during tenure of employment.
