This is administrative and investigative work directing, through subordinate supervisors, the work activities of a large staff of detectives engaged in conducting investigations of criminal activities and in servicing subpoenas and warrants. The employee in this class serves as second in command to the chief of the investigation staff with responsibility for the assignment and review of work performed by the individual sections. The supervision of a detective force through subordinate supervisors and working with other law enforcement agency officials to coordinate investigations are significant aspects of the work. Work is performed under the direction of the Chief County detective and involves responsibility for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the investigative staff of the Office of the District Attorney.

• Receives and evaluates assignments relating to investigations designed to gather evidence to aid in the prosecution of cases or to uncover the existence of criminal activity; determines the proper section to conduct investigation and makes assignment; confers with the chief of prosecution detectives regarding priorities of investigations and relays special instructions to detectives through subordinate supervisors.
• Oversees the conduct of investigations; reviews periodic and special progress reports submitted by detective staff; coordinates investigations carried out by two or more sections or in conjunction with the police department or other law enforcement agencies; determines that investigations have been brought to a satisfactory conclusion and authorizes the preparation of final reports and case records.
• Participates in the development and implementation of policies and procedures relating to criminal investigations; directs the servicing of subpoenas and warrants as well as the extradition and return of prisoners to and from other governmental jurisdictions; directs the preparation and periodic revision of a duty manual for prosecution detectives and otherwise establishes and modifies investigative and related office practices and procedures.
• Selects, orients and trains new investigative personnel; evaluates their progress through consultations with subordinate supervisors, review of reports and by personal observation; meets with individuals and citizen groups to learn of alleged criminal activity and to evaluate requests for special investigations; personally directs investigations of a highly complex or sensitive nature.
• Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

• One year of permanent civil service status as a Prosecution Detective Captain.

• Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES

• Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Deputy Chief Prosecution Detective.
