PROSECUTION DETECTIVE CAPTAIN
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is supervisory law enforcement work overseeing and coordinating the work of a major
section composed of several units charged with the investigation of a variety of criminal activities or in
the servicing of subpoenas and warrants. Responsibility for the caliber of investigations performed for
attorneys is of major significance.
Work is performed under the direction of a higher level legal investigator. Assignments are
analytical in nature and are carried out in accordance with accepted investigatory standards and applicable
departmental regulations. Employees in this class participate with one another in directing the
investigative staff of the Office of the District Attorney.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Reviews the work of the various investigative units through subordinate supervisors; spot-checks
the work to determine that the proper investigative procedures are being followed; advises subordinate
supervisors on how to resolve case problems; reviews activity reports to determine that proper records
are maintained; inspects completed investigative reports to determine their accuracy and completeness;
reviews legal papers to insure that they are properly executed.
- Reviews the work of the legal process section to determine that subpoenas are being served
properly; determines that priority requirements are being met; determines that internal security measures
are being adhered to by the subordinate investigatory staff.
- Participates in the investigation of highly confidential cases such as malfeasance of office or
complaints against staff investigators; selects personnel to conduct the investigation; instructs subordinates
as to how the investigation should proceed; reviews periodic progress reports and advises investigators
of additional areas that should be checked; briefs superiors and attorneys on the findings of the
investigation; compiles information regarding the investigation that the attorneys or the court may request;
testifies in court.
- Develops and implements procedures relating to the investigation and processing of legal forms
such as bench warrants and subpoenas; prepares revisions to the duty manual; establishes and modifies
office practices and procedures.
- Participates in interviews and recommends selection of new investigative employees; oversees and
participates in the training of new employees to conduct effective investigations; schedules personnel for
training to the Police Academy, FBI training school and other law enforcement agencies; resolves any
disciplinary problems that arise.
- Develops security desk schedules and insures that the front desk is manned at all times; reviews
and approves overtime requests; signs daily attendance reports.
- Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience
requirements as approved on 9/81.)
- One year of permanent civil service status as a Prosecution Detective Lieutenant.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to meet the physical and medical standards approved for this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Prosecution Detective Captain.
