PROSECUTION DETECTIVE SERGEANT
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is law enforcement work at the first supervisory level overseeing the activities of detectives
conducting legal investigations in an assigned unit. Employees conduct special investigations which entail
interrogating witnesses, taking formal statements and issuing warrants and subpoenas. Contact with the public
and law enforcement officials as well as responsibility for instructing and leading investigators is a significant
aspect of the work.
Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level investigator. Assignments require
the use of evaluative thinking and are carried out in accordance with standard investigatory practices and
general work instructions. The employees participate with members of other law enforcement agencies in
conducting investigations of facts pertinent to such cases as homicide, rape, robbery, burglary, vice and
business frauds.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Assigns subordinate investigators to attorneys who assign men to investigate cases such as homicide,
robbery, burglary, rape, larceny or fraud; reviews the cases with the investigators; outlines the aspects of the
case which require special attention; reviews the progress of investigations through daily conferences and
reports to insure that no evidence has been overlooked; advises investigators on problems involving conflicting
information; may participate in the investigation by re-interviewing or locating witnesses.
- Checks the listing of cases scheduled for trials; assigns subordinate investigators to issue and serve
warrants and subpoenas, to locate witnesses, to verify deaths, and to secure fugitives from other jurisdictions;
advises subordinate investigators regarding such problems as locating witnesses; ascertains that all required
witnesses are present at pre-trial preparation.
- Conducts investigations on the more complex or confidential cases; interrogates witnesses and takes
formal statements; checks arrest records of plaintiffs; conducts background investigations on plaintiffs and
defendants; prepares reports of findings for attorneys; testifies in court concerning findings.
- Prepares and processes warrants initiated by the various units; records warrants in log book and prepares
file on defendant containing arrest papers, incident report and private criminal complaint; presents warrant
before administrative judge for approval and signature; assigns warrant to subordinate for servicing; presents
defendant with a copy of the complaint, advises him of charges and his legal rights; prepares subpoena and
serves it at the defendant's arraignment hearing; notifies concerned personnel of the court date.
- Assigns subordinate investigators to investigate complaints of delinquency cases, morals offenses and
domestic relations; reviews morals complaints to determine whether crime has been committed; prepares morals
warrants and subpoenas for servicing by subordinates.
- Prepares and submits periodic progress reports on the status of investigations conducted by subordinate
investigators.
- Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience
requirements as approved on 9/81.)
- Experience totaling two years or more in one or more of the following classes: Prosecution Detective
I or Prosecution Detective II.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a
position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Prosecution Detective Sergeant.
