PROSECUTION DETECTIVE SERGEANT


GENERAL DEFINITION

This is law enforcement work at the first supervisory level overseeing the activities of detectives conducting legal investigations in an assigned unit. Employees conduct special investigations which entail interrogating witnesses, taking formal statements and issuing warrants and subpoenas. Contact with the public and law enforcement officials as well as responsibility for instructing and leading investigators is a significant aspect of the work.

Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level investigator. Assignments require the use of evaluative thinking and are carried out in accordance with standard investigatory practices and general work instructions. The employees participate with members of other law enforcement agencies in conducting investigations of facts pertinent to such cases as homicide, rape, robbery, burglary, vice and business frauds.
