POLICE INSPECTOR

This is responsible supervisory technical police work in commanding a division of the Police Department, or assisting in commanding the park guard.

An employee in this class has administrative and supervisory responsibility for personnel and equipment assigned to major specific geographical areas or specialized police functions. The employee in this class is directly responsible for the effectiveness of police service given by his command. Work is performed with considerable independence within the framework of departmental rules and regulations. Instructions are received at periodic meetings with supervisors and through oral and written orders. Supervision is received through conference, evaluation of reports submitted and observation of results obtained.

• Commands a division of uniformed police; supervises, through Police Captains, a number of districts in assigned geographical areas; conducts periodic staff meetings to plan activities aimed to decrease the incidence of crime and vice in the assigned area; receives and directs the investigation of complaints against police personnel; submits necessary reports on activities of the division; investigates requests and needs for increased police service in assigned geographical areas, and either effectuates necessary changes or forwards recommendations concerning these requests to superiors.
• Commands the traffic division consisting of the highway patrol, foot traffic and accident investigation districts; conducts periodic staff meetings to review and plan for the control and regulations of traffic; directs the preparation of plans, and their implementation for controlling special traffic situations such as in connection with parades, highway construction detours and large-scale sport events; requests changes in traffic flow, signs and signals by Streets Department engineers.
• Assists in commanding the Fairmount Park Guard; supervises the operations of the several Park Guard districts; recommends new and improved techniques concerning crime, vice and traffic enforcement in areas under the Guard's jurisdiction.
• Commands the juvenile division; directs the investigation and follow-up of all crimes perpetrated by juveniles within the city; supervises the operation of the Policewomen's unit; investigates all problems of racial or religious nature affecting police operations; prepares and delivers speeches to civic, veterans and social organizations on the causes and effects of juvenile crime and techniques of its prevention and control.
• Commands the central records and communications division; supervises the operations of the communications and records sections, tabulating, identification and related police units; directs the compilation and analysis of various crime statistics of department-wide concern.
• Assists in commanding the detective bureau; coordinates the headquarters special squads such as homicide, robbery, burglary, and the detective division; conducts periodic staff meetings; determines need for specialized training in investigatory techniques within the detective division; prepares and submits reports.
• Commands all uniformed police units in the city on an assigned night shift; supervises the activities of police personnel during any major police action, catastrophe, or emergency.
• Performs related work as required.

Emotional stability

EXPERIENCE
• One year as a Police Captain and/or Police Staff Inspector.

• Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

• Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Police Inspector.
