This is responsible, supervisory police work commanding a police district or directing the work of a specialized police unit. Employees are responsible for planning and directing police activities in a designated geographic area or of a specialized police unit. Employees in this class are responsible for the caliber of police service given by his command. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures, but much latitude exists for individual judgment and discretion. The use of seasoned judgment and specialized knowledges and skills are required in appraising the effectiveness of police investigation techniques and interpreting departmental policies and rules. Work is reviewed through reviews of reports, discussions, and observations of results obtained.

• Supervises work of police officers and subordinate officers in his district unit; confers with and advises them on special problems.
• Reviews reports prepared by subordinate officers, and prepares and supervises preparation records and reports.
• Dispatches detectives to secure information, makes investigations and arrests, and questions complainants and suspects.
• Supervises enforcement of laws covering commercialized vice; directs investigations and surveillances of suspected persons or establishments; organizes and directs raids.
• Interviews and interrogates suspects and prisoners, prepares cases, and appears and testifies in court; advises and instructs personnel in investigative matters.
• Performs related work as required.

• One year of experience as a Police Lieutenant.

• Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

• Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Police Captain.
