DEPUTY SHERIFF SERGEANT
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is court security and enforcement work at the first supervisory level. The employee supervises and
participates with a staff of lower level deputy sheriffs in transporting prisoners, maintaining courtroom security, serving
legal documents and executing a variety of civil and criminal court orders. The supervision of a staff of deputy sheriffs
and the ability to deal firmly and tactfully with hostile members of the public is a significant aspect of the work.
Work is performed under the supervision of a higher level deputy sheriff. Assignments require evaluative
thinking and are carried out in accordance with standard departmental practices and general work instructions. The
employee participates with others in providing court security and enforcement services. Working conditions which can
only be partially controlled and physical effort are frequently encountered in escorting prisoners, stopping disorders and
making arrests.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Assigns deputy sheriffs to operate vans and buses to transport prisoners to and from institutions and courts.
- Observes the loading, unloading, and searching of prisoners; assumes responsibility for all contraband seized from
prisoners as a result of searches.
- Directs the placement of prisoners in cells for temporary confinement; notes time when prisoners are scheduled
for court appearance.
- Orders deputy sheriffs to remove prisoners from cells; to appear in court; determines that prisoners are returned
from court and replaced in cells.
- Directs the removal of prisoners from cells; oversee the loading of prisoners into vans and buses for return to
institutions.
- Ascertains that security measures are maintained in courtrooms by seeing that prisoners are securely guarded;
approves the admission of authorized visitors to cell areas.
- Assigns and supervises the activities of a number of lower level deputy sheriffs engaged in serving subpoenas,
writs, summonses and other legal documents on defendants, their attorneys or other legally recognized representatives;
serving jury summonses to potential jurors; serving bench warrants by arresting named defendants; performing
investigations to locate defendants who have moved or are attempting to evade service.
- Receives and records incoming work; makes specific assignments; maintains control records of work performed
by deputies.
- Performs more complex investigations and directs deputies at injunction enforcement and more difficult sales,
evictions and arrests.
- Answers telephone class and confers with defendants, plaintiffs and their attorneys on the activities of deputies;
processes, schedules and makes necessary arrangements for sheriff's sales.
- Advises and instructs deputy sheriffs in the more difficult aspects of the work.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the rules and regulations concerning the transportation and custody of prisoners.
- the regulations concerning the behavior of prisoners during court sessions.
- the forms and procedures applicable to the appearance of prisoners in court.
- the methods and techniques of field investigation, particularly as they apply to the service of legal instruments.
- the forms and procedures applicable to the service of legal instruments.
- the legal requirements for serving and enforcing court orders.
- proficiency in the care and use of firearms.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates
for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 5/73.)
EDUCATION
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
EXPERIENCE
- Three years of experience in court security and/or court enforcement work.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Deputy Sheriff Sergeant.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
- Ability to obtain, or possession of, an automobile in good operating condition if required by job assignment.
