CORRECTIONAL INMATE CLASSIFICATION SUPERVISOR
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is supervisory work directing the classification process of newly admitted inmates and the re-classification process of current inmates in the City's correctional facility. An employee in this class directs the process of interviewing inmates and evaluating background information to determine the appropriate security level for housing within the prisons. An employee in this class applies predetermined criteria to select inmates who are to be transferred to other counties, assigns and reviews the work of personnel in the Classification Unit, and works closely with personnel who are responsible for moving the inmates into the general population once they are classified. Contact with social workers, lawyers, prison personnel, and prison personnel from other counties is a significant aspect of the work. Work is performed under the direction of an administrative superior.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)
- The position must be responsible for directing the classification process for newly admitted inmates and the re-classification process for current inmates.
- The position must be responsible for supervising the daily work of inmate classification staff within the Classification Unit.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Directs the inmate classification process through subordinate inmate classification staff; monitors classification and re-classification reviews to ensure accuracy; approves overrides on inmate classifications when needed; receives inmate medical clearance lists from the Medical Unit; maintains lists of all inmates placed in each of the programs within the prison system.
- Assesses security level and places inmates into the general population in the absence of the Movement Coordinator; works closely with the Movement Coordinator to plan and schedule the transfer of inmates to other counties for housing; maintains a list of all inmates that are housed in other counties.
- Trains all new employees on the classification and re-classification process; describes the proper process for interviewing and rating inmates; supervises all personnel located in the Classification Unit; assigns and reviews the work of employees in the Classification Unit; prepares performance reports for subordinates; handles all problems and questions relating to the classification of inmates.
- Responds to phone calls and written correspondence, both internal and external, in reference to inmate classification; attends weekly meetings to discuss classification issues; works with the MIS staff to discuss problems with and make recommendations for the Lock & Track computer system; produces a daily admissions and discharge status report.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the principles, practices and techniques of the inmate classification and re-classification process
- regulations and guidelines affecting the security classification rating and transfer of inmates
- policies, procedures and guidelines governing the security and operations of a correctional institution
ABILITY TO:
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with divisional and departmental personnel and professionals outside the department
- prepare written reports
- operate a computer system as it applies to inmate classification
- supervise a group of employees performing inmate classification
- train new employees in the inmate classification process
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 4/02.)
EDUCATION
- Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university.
AND
EXPERIENCE
OR
Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department, which has included a bachelor's degree as an educational minimum and the specific experience as described above.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of
a position in this class.
