SOCIAL WORK INTERN

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

This is social work at the intern level, developing the knowledge and skills necessary for advancement to a Social Worker Trainee position.  Employees in this class participate in a structured internship program and formal classroom education leading to a bachelor's degree in social work.  Enrollment as a matriculating student in a bachelor's degree program for social work and successful completion of required coursework are required to maintain status in this class.  Work is performed under the close supervision of a Social Work Supervisor.

 

ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class):

§  The employee must work in the Department of Human Services and maintain satisfactory performance reports as a Social Work Intern.

§  The employee must initially be assigned to work with experienced social work staff and assist in performance and provision of social services to clients.

§  Continued enrollment in a social work degree program and successful completion of the degree requirements within one year of appointment are essential requirements of this class.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

            Functions in a training capacity and receives on-the-job instructions and classroom training in the concepts, principles, practices and applications of social work as applied to assignment area.

Assists social work staff to obtain information from clients to aid them in obtaining a wide variety of social services on the basis of established policy.

Learns how to assist applicants and clients in utilizing various community resources to meet their needs.

Attends training courses and staff meetings and participates in various training activities.

Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

§  Social factors and causes of social maladjustment which necessitate the placement or institutionalization of clients

§  English usage, spelling and grammar

 

SKILL IN:

 

§  Identifying community assets and available resources

 

ABILITY TO:

 

§  Learn the principles, practices and techniques of social work

§  Learn the functions and resources of public and private welfare and related agencies for meeting social, financial, and medical needs

§  Learn to utilize appropriate methods for interacting sensitively, effectively, and professionally with persons from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds

§  Learn the principles, practices and techniques of family counseling

§  Learn the principles, practices and techniques of working with individuals with severe emotional, mental, and social problems

§  Learn casework principles, practices and techniques

§  Prepare a variety of written reports

§  Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 09/02.)

 

EDUCATION:

 

Completion of three years of study (90 credits) at an accredited college or university, with major coursework in social work, and acceptance into Child Welfare Education Baccalaureate program or equivalent program.

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

 

Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Social Work Intern, if required by work assignment.

 

NOTE:            Child Protective Service Law requires FBI criminal history background check and Pennsylvania State Police criminal record and Pennsylvania child abuse background check as a condition of initial appointment to the class and during tenure of employment.

 

NOTE: If the FBI/Pennsylvania State Police criminal background checks reveal the existence of a disqualifying offense, additional documentation must be submitted as required by the City of Philadelphia to determine eligibility for appointment to or continued employment in the class under the Child Protective Services Law.
