GRADUATE OCCUPATIONAL HYGIENIST
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is entry level industrial hygiene work, learning how to identify and evaluate occupational health and safety hazards in a variety of industrial settings. Employees in this class are trained to investigate and evaluate potential and existing health and safety hazards. Assignments increase in complexity as employees approach the intermediate level of the series. Preparing reports of findings and making recommendations to remediate problems are important aspects of the work. Work is performed under the direction of a higher level safety administrator.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)
- Positions must perform occupational health and safety work in an industrial setting or for the City's risk management agency.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Reads technical literature and other complex materials required for the job; learns the laws, regulations, policies, standards and procedures relevant to occupational safety work; attends classroom training, workshops, or seminars; participates in on-the-job training and developmental assignments.
- Collects and records data obtained from technical or scientific instruments; evaluates and makes recommendations to technical superiors.
- Responds to complaints of physical pain, injuries, allergic reaction, environmental pollutants and hazards; performs inspections, independently or in conjunction with other safety professionals; interviews employees; prepares reports.
- Observes and participates on committees and panels regarding health and safety polices and regulations and the development of safety programs.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- theory, principles and practices as applied to the area of industrial hygiene and occupational safety
- the principles and proper usage of a variety of testing, measuring and control devices
ABILITY TO:
- learn to identify health and safety hazards in the workplace
- collect and analyze data
- prepare concise and comprehensive reports
- make appropriate recommendations
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 10/05.)
EDUCATION
- Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department, with major course work in industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, or environmental engineering.
NOTE
Bachelor’s degree in programs in areas other than stated above may be acceptable if the degree has been supplemented by fifteen (15) credits in Safety Health, Safety Sciences, General Sciences, or by possession of an Advanced Safety Certificate (ASC) issued by the National Safety Council.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of
a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as an Graduate Occupational Hygienist.
