MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST 1
GENERAL DEFINITION:
This is entry level medical technology work performing diagnostic laboratory tests in the analysis of human tissue and body fluids in a clinical laboratory. An employee in this class performs a variety of standardized laboratory tests in a variety of fields, which include clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology, urinalysis, and hematology. Work may include providing technical guidance or training to laboratory staff. Work is performed under the general direction of a technical supervisor.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class)
Employees in this class must perform entry level multi-disciplinary medical technology work in the Public Health Medical Laboratory, or in one of the City’s district health centers.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Performs a variety of standardized laboratory tests in the fields of clinical chemistry, immunology, hematology, microbiology, general automated molecular microbiology, environmental microbiology and urinalysis; performs tests requiring use of automated equipment such as chemistry analyzers, hematology analyzers and cell counters, flow cytometer, immunoassay analyzers and atomic absorption spectrophotometers; performs complex tests requiring use of pipettors, dilutors, spectrophotometers and microscopes.
Conducts standardized laboratory tests to identify the origins or causes of disease states by following laboratory procedures for specimen handling and test analysis; validates, reports, and maintains records of examinations conducted and patient test results; complies with established policies and procedures for quality control, quality assurance and safety; performs and documents quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance activities.
Prepares special culture media, solutions, reagents, standards and controls according to prescribed procedures; may be required to dissect animal heads; perform rabies testing on animals to test for the presence of rabies and other infectious diseases; prepares slides.
Assists lower-level technical personnel in troubleshooting; provides technical guidance and reviews their work.
Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 7/23.)
Option 1
EDUCATION
Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university with major course work in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry and/or Biochemistry.
OR
Option 2
Current certification in one of the following:
- Medical Technologist by American Medical Technologists (AMT), or
by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as:
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or
- Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT), or
- Chemistry (C), or
- Hematology (H), or
- Microbiology (M), or
- by the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA), or
- in a closely related area by Health Education and Welfare (HEW) or equivalent national certifying agency.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
Certification in one of the areas listed in the minimum education and training section above within six months of appointment as a Medical Technologist 1. Failure to obtain certification will delay promotion to the Medical Technologist 2 class.
Note: Certification will not be required for employees who have permanent status in this class on February 1, 2011.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
