MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST 2
GENERAL DEFINITION:
This is certified medical technology work performing complex diagnostic laboratory tests in the analysis of human tissue and body fluids in a clinical laboratory. An employee in this class performs a variety of laboratory tests using complex methods in a variety of fields, which include clinical chemistry, microbiology, advanced molecular microbiology, immunology, urinalysis and hematology. Work includes providing technical guidance and training to lower level technicians, troubleshooting instrumentation and testing problems, compiling information, reporting results from analysis/research findings and recommending process improvements. Work is performed under the general direction of a technical supervisor.

· Employees in this class must perform certified level medical technology work in the Public Health Medical Laboratory.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Performs a variety of complex laboratory tests in the fields of clinical chemistry, immunology, hematology, microbiology general automated, advanced molecular microbiology, environmental microbiology and urinalysis; performs tests utilizing complex molecular testing techniques such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and Nucleic Acid Amplification (NAAT) techniques requiring use of automated equipment such as chemistry analyzers, hematology analyzers and cell counters, flow cytometer, immunoassay analyzers, Tuberculosis lab, whole and targeted gene sequencing, and atomic absorption spectrophotometers; performs complex tests requiring use of pipettors, dilutors, spectrophotometers and microscopes; troubleshoots instruments and resolves problems with testing issues; informs supervisor of action taken to correct any instrument or testing problem.
Conducts standardized laboratory tests to identify the origins or causes of disease states by following laboratory procedures for specimen handling and test analysis; modifies test parameters such as buffer strengths, amplification and reaction times as applicable; validates, reports and maintains records of examinations conducted and patient test results; prepares reports resulting from analysis/research findings and compiles information and submits verbal and written reports to supervisor; complies with established policies and procedures for quality control, quality assurance and safety; performs and documents quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance activities; advises and makes recommendations for process improvements to technical supervisor.
Prepares special culture media, solutions, reagents, standards and controls according to prescribed procedures; may be required to dissect animal heads; perform rabies testing on animals to test for the presence of rabies and other infectious diseases; prepares slides.
Trains lower level technical personnel; provides technical guidance and assists with troubleshooting.
Assigns and reviews the work of lower level technical personnel.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
· the principles, practices and methods of medical technology
· complex tests requiring use of pipettors, dilutors, spectrophotometers and microscopes
· standard laboratory instruments and equipment and the techniques and procedures concerning their use
· current practices and developments in the field of medical technology
SKILL IN:
· the care and use of laboratory equipment
· the use of the microscope and accessory equipment
· the accurate identification of bacteria and other micro-organisms
ABILITY TO:
· perform medical technology tests including Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Nucleic Acid Amplification (NAAT) techniques
· prepare specimens for testing and interpret results
· train lower level technical personnel
· assign and review work of lower level technical personnel
· follow oral and written instructions
· maintain accurate records
· establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 7/23.)
CERTIFICATION:
Certification as one of the following:
- Medical Technologist by American Medical Technologists (AMT), or
by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as:
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or
- Medical Technologist (MT), or
- Chemistry (C), or
- Hematology (H), or
- Microbiology (M) or
- Certification by the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA), or
- Certification in a related area by Health Education and Welfare (HEW) or equivalent national certifying agency.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:
Six (6) months of experience performing diagnostic laboratory tests in the analysis of human tissue and body fluids in a public health clinical laboratory or other clinical laboratory setting.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
Certification in one of the areas listed in the minimum education and training section above at the time of appointment and during tenure of employment as a Medical Technologist 2.
