STREETS PLANS DESIGNER 1
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is technical work computing and drafting assigned street plans. Work includes making scale drawings of new and revised street systems or sub-divisions from legal descriptions and councilmanic ordinances. Employees in this class prepare computer generated drafts of street plans and perform calculations to determine exact locations and dimensions of streets. Work is performed under the direction of a technical supervisor.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)
• The position must perform the work in the Streets Department.
• The position must be responsible for preparing scale drawings of new and revised
street and bridge systems.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Prepares and verifies reports, specifications, deeds of dedication, designs and scale drawings for councilmanic ordinances relative to changes in the official City street plan.
Performs calculations to determine exact location and dimensions of streets, drainage areas, elevations and street grades.
Writes legal descriptions on newly revised sections of the city and performs research of property owners affected with the changes in City plans.
Computes plans for new and revised City street and bridge systems from preliminary sketches; prepares computer generated drafts of streets and sub-division plans.
Participates with higher level designers in final checks of completed street plans involving the recomputing of all mathematics and the rechecking of ordinances, specifications, report plans, and district survey reports.
Performs a variety of tasks required in the computer programming of solutions to plane geometry and trigonometry problems in order to calculate right-of-way lines, curve alignments, and multi-sided plot areas;
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
• AutoCAD (Computer Aided Design) program as it relates to drafting street or bridge plans
• reading and interpreting plans and blueprints
• the principles and practices of urban street design and layout
• surveying and engineering of drafting as they relate to street design and land sub-division practices
• mathematics and related engineering computations as they pertain to street design or the determination of alignment and grade
• office practices and procedures.
ABILITY TO:
• neatly and precisely draft complex engineering drawings using both pencil and ink techniques
• learn the state and local law and construction codes relating to real estate conveyancing and land title work
• establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates
• present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 8/13.)
EDUCATION:
Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
Four years of experience in surveying and/or related City street design.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:
Two years of experience as chief of a survey corps performing construction and/or land surveys; or two years in drafting to scale final, complex and detailed plans, diagrams, designs, schematic drawings and/or various types of maps and sketches.
NOTE: Completion of a degree program at an accredited college or university with major course work in Land Surveying, Surveying Technology or Civil Engineering with at least 10 credit hours in surveying satisfies the General Experience requirement on a year for year basis.
NOTE: Possession of Certification as a Land Surveyor in Training satisfies the General Experience requirement.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
