SURVEYOR 1

GENERAL DEFINITION

            This is surveying work serving as chief of a survey corps performing construction and/or land surveys.  Employees in this class supervise a small group of subordinate employees engaged in measuring and marking assigned areas by locating and fixing lines, angles and elevations to collect data for survey purposes.  Employees compute lines and grades and may prepare engineered plans, make estimates and prepare sketches and plans from field notes.  Employees have controlling responsibility for the technical aspects and accuracy of the survey corps work.  Work is performed under the supervision of a technical superior.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

            Supervises a small group of subordinate employees and may participate in determining exact field measurements and in marking and staking the project area for a variety of surveys such as preliminary, construction, property, excavations, tunnel, control, topographic, one-call markings, hydrographic and aerial surveys; trains, instructs, and assists members of the survey corps in the location, marking and staking of survey areas, the use of survey tools, equipment and technology in taking exact measurements and notes, and in making sketches.

            Directs the survey corps in performing surveying activities; performs preliminary research to collect required background information and evaluates data necessary to facilitate the conduct of field surveys; plans sequence of operations and determines control points and survey techniques in the field; ensures that survey tools, equipment, vehicles and materials are stocked and in good working condition.

            Takes thorough and accurate notes at field site concerning line location and topography on preliminary surveys, contour profiles, slopes and grades on construction surveys, locations of utility lines and related information for use in design and construction work; makes topographical sketches of the surveyed area; reads blueprints and provides contractors with "cut and fill" information and elevation, and establishes curb lines and grades during construction projects; obtains all lines, grades, elevations and locations for the preparation of as-built drawings; makes weather and temperature corrections with standard equipment and charts; makes field sketches of areas surveyed.

            Exercises judgment to effect necessary modifications to previously engineered plans and adapts data collection techniques based on conditions found at survey sites.

            Prepares sketches, plans and drawings from field notes and makes necessary calculations; verifies field calculations and data. 

            Confers with contractors, builders, developers, lawyers and the general public upon matters pertaining to surveys and plans.

            Performs calculations and drafting of survey data as required.

            May use computer-aided design software to draft basic survey plans.

            Performs office work connected with the completion of surveying assignments; prepares plans, checks contracts and estimates, computes quantities, etc.

            Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE OF:

•           the principles, practices, techniques and instruments used in surveying

•           mathematics including trigonometry and geometry as it is applied to field surveying and related engineering computations

•           the principles, practices, techniques and instruments of drafting and engineering as required in surveying

•           supervisory methods and techniques

•           federal, state and local laws and standards for surveying

•        learn to use Global Position System (GPS) equipment, and other optical and

electronic equipment and instruments used in modern surveying

•           establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, contractors, inspectors, builders and the general public

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 7/18.)

EDUCATION:

            Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.

AND

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:

            Two years of surveying experience.

SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:

            Two years of surveying experience which must have been in the operation of an instrument.

NOTE: Completion of an associate’s degree program at an accredited college or university with major course work in Land Surveying or Surveying Technology, Applied Technology, Engineering Technology, Mathematics, or any discipline of Engineering satisfies the General Experience requirement.

NOTE: Completion of a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited college or university with major course work in Land Surveying, Surveying Technology, Applied Technology, Engineering Technology, Mathematics or any discipline of Engineering or Certification as a Land Surveyor in Training satisfies both the General and Specific Experience requirements.

OR

            Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources that has included the specific experience or completion of a bachelor’s degree program as described above or certification as a Land Surveyor in Training.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

            Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

            Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Surveyor 1.
