This is advanced level architectural work, performing complex architectural assignments in the area of specialization. An employee in this class reviews site designs, plans, specifications and other documents for feasibility, adherence to departmental and professional standards and practices, and compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations. The employee may provide technical direction to lower level architectural projects coordinators. Contact with engineers, planners, architects, and representatives of civic, community and governmental organizations is a significant aspect of the work. Work is performed under the direction of a higher-level architect/ engineer.

1. The employee must work on complex architectural assignments in the area of specialization.
2. The employee must review site designs, plans, specifications, and other documents for feasibility, adherence to departmental and professional standards and practices, and compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Assists in the preparation of capital budget requests; reviews site designs, plans, specifications and other documents for feasibility, adherence to departmental and professional standards and practices, and compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations; recommends revisions to the plans and specifications, if warranted; meets with consultants and staff to resolve design problems.
Prepares design drawings, specifications and cost estimates; participates in the review of designs of consultants for proposed project construction or renovation; reviews bids submitted and makes recommendations to superiors.
Participates in meetings with community groups, city engineers and architects, planners, contractors, consultants, and departmental administrators to discuss community needs and desires to receive feedback regarding the same; disseminates information regarding plans and designs; makes written and oral report presentations during stages of the projects.
Inspects construction work in progress for adherence to architectural standards, designs and contract specifications; attends design/construction meetings; monitors budgets, prepares reports and performs other ancillary administrative responsibilities related to assigned projects; conducts general administration and inspection of construction; prepares, reviews and/ or approves project-related documents such as invoices, change orders, RFP’s, etc.
Performs related work as required.
Performs field surveys of proposed new project construction sites or existing facilities and areas being considered for renovation; determines soil composition, drainage patterns, area shape and contour; determines type and location of trees and shrubs; recommends type of materials to be used, such as fencing, sculpture, stone, brick, padding, and asphalt compositions, to maximize user safety, facility durability, and budgetary limits.
Participates in design studies of site improvements and/or building construction or renovation work; attends public meetings and conferences with other City departments and governmental agencies; monitors assigned components of design, construction, and post-construction work for achieving design, budget, and scheduling objectives.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
· the principles of architectural theory in the designated specialty area.
· the principles of planning and land use in the designated specialty area.
· materials and methods of construction and renovation in the designated specialty area.
· the principles, practices, techniques and instruments used in project documentation.
· the sources of information and current developments in the field of the designated specialty area.
· the fundamental theory of structural, mechanical and electrical design in the Building Design specialty.
· the principles and practices of horticulture and plant ecology, for the Landscape Design specialty.
· computer software packages and computer-aided design and drafting software as related to the work
SKILL IN:
· the preparation of presentation designs, graphics, and drawings
ABILITY TO:
· prepare cost estimates
· administer and inspect construction and renovation work
· coordinate architectural, structural, and design work
· coordinate work with other disciplines if required by assignment
· complete work within a designated time schedule and within established budgets
· learn municipal procurement and contracting practices
· read and interpret architectural plans and specifications
· provide technical oversight and guidance to lower level Architectural Projects Coordinators
· establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, consultants, contractors and department officials
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 3/08.)
EDUCATION:
Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university, with major course work in architecture or architectural engineering for the Building/ Site Design Specialty or landscape architecture for the Landscape Design Specialty.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
Two years of experience performing architectural project work in the designated specialty area.
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:
Two years of full performance level experience performing architectural project work in the designated specialty area.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources, which has included a bachelor's degree as stated above as the educational minimum and the specific experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
