GENERAL DEFINITION
This is beginning level architectural work developing knowledge and abilities in the architectural field. Employees in this class perform assignments of limited but increasing scope and complexity. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher-level architect. Assignments require evaluative thinking and are carried out in accordance with standard architectural practices and general work instructions. Complete work is used by others to further architectural projects.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
· Receives departmental orientation and training; reads manuals, standard books, and previous records
· Gains experience and proficiency toward the full performance level by performing the following:
· Develops aspects of plans for major architectural projects or completes plans for the less complex projects.
· Performs field surveys of sites requiring additions or renovations; takes measurements; determines shape, size, and condition; locates utility connections and verifies accessibility; investigates the type of material and equipment currently available on the market.
· Sketches, designs, traces, and draws; uses standard architectural symbols.
· May make detailed architectural contract drawings; performs some mathematical calculations; makes presentation drawings and scale models.
· May do some cost estimating
· Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
· the principles, practices and techniques of architecture
· the strengths and uses of construction materials
SKILL IN:
· drawing architectural plans and making technical computations
ABILITY TO:
· prepare architectural plans and designs for structure construction and renovation within the restrictions imposed by land limitations, functional considerations, architectural principles and practices, city policies, budgetary appropriations and existing structures
· read and interpret architectural and engineering plans and specifications
· establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, departmental officials, architects, and engineers
· learn to utilize learn to utilize computer-aided design and drafting software as related to the work
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 4/19.)
EDUCATION:
Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university, in architecture or architectural engineering or a closely related field.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to meet the approved minimal physical and medical standards.
