MECHANICAL ENGINEER I
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is mechanical engineering work preparing designs, plans, specifications and
estimates and inspecting and testing the installation and operation of mechanical equipment in
a variety of public works projects. The employee is given increasingly difficult assignments and
is expected to use progressively more independence of judgment in planning work details,
completing preliminary designs and making technical decisions.
Work is performed under the supervision of an engineering superior. Assignments
require evaluative thinking and are performed in accordance with standard engineering practices
and general work instructions. Employees in this class provide interpretive and advisory
services to engineering superiors which lead to the completion of engineering projects.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Designs and details component parts of mechanical equipment such as high pressure water
pumps, motors, a variety of valves such as check, butterfly, automatic and manual gate, water
main valve chamber and appurtenances, sludge pumps and collectors, conveyor systems, fans,
incinerators, grit and screen ejectors, compressors, conveyor equipment and high speed overhead
electrical cranes; prepares drawings of mechanical layouts covering plumbing, heating,
ventilation and pumping equipment; prepares estimates of mechanical requirements for
structures; makes simple calculations of heat losses and ventilation requirements.
- Reviews drawings and technical data of mechanical engineering work to determine
compliance with sound engineering practices and established standard codes and regulations;
makes related engineering computations; prepares estimates and participates in the preparation
of contract specifications and plans; conducts technical investigations and special studies;
evaluates mechanical equipment and property through field investigations; studies conditions of
mechanical property and inspects mechanical work; prepares special reports recommending
corrective action.
- Checks contractor's shop drawings in relation to fabrication, installation and site
arrangement of equipment and structural components for conformance to design specifications.
- Plans, organizes and prepares detailed mechanical engineering drawings depicting the
placement of mechanical engineering equipment and systems.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the principles and practices of mechanical engineering, as applied to mechanical
equipment design, installation, maintenance and operation.
- engineering mathematics and mathematical tables used in mechanical engineering work.
- characteristics of materials.
ABILITY TO:
- design specific phases of a large scale engineering project involving replacement,
rehabilitation or original installation of mechanical equipment, appurtenances, and related
equipment.
- prepare specifications and estimates.
- obtain field information and data necessary to the design of mechanical equipment
installations.
- check to check contractors' shop drawings for equipment fabrications and installation for
conformance to departmental plans and specifications and to make necessary corrections.
- learn and apply regulations affecting the work.
- work with associates and supervisory mechanical, civil, sanitary and electrical engineers
and architects in the total design of public works projects.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement
represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based
on training and experience requirements as approved on 10/68.)
- Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university with
major course work in mechanical engineering.
- One year of engineering experience in the design or installation of mechanical equipment.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience that has included the
completion of a bachelor's degree program in an acceptable area of engineering as an educational
minimum.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
