GENERAL DEFINITION

This is electrical engineering work preparing designs, plans, specifications and estimates and inspecting and testing the construction and installation of electrical equipment and systems in connection with a variety of public works projects. The employee is given progressively more difficult assignments and is expected to use progressively more independence of judgment in planning work details and making technical decisions. Work is performed under the supervision of an engineering superior.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

Both Specialties

Collects information and data relative to the electrical engineering phases of construction projects; prepares plans, designs and specifications for electrical construction or installation projects; makes cost estimates using appropriate mathematical computations; details schematic diagrams of electrical layouts; makes calculations to determine circuit requirements; prepares studies, plans and diagrams of a wide variety of electrical equipment; and makes scale drawings of electrical parts and equipment, and revises circuit tracings; may participate in projects involving the use of a computer for engineering applications.
Inspects electrical equipment before, during, and after installation; makes field inspections of work done by contractors for conformance with plans and specifications; makes required field tests; makes authorized field changes in plans and specifications; checks and records work progress; prepares periodic progress and technical reports.
Reviews plans and specifications prepared by consulting engineers for compliance with sound electrical engineering practices.

Performs duties described above on the following:

Communications Specialty

Public safety radio, CATV and CCTV systems, alarms, microwave radio, laser fax and other electrical and electronic aspects of communications equipment and systems design and installation.

General Specialty

Power distribution system, transit and rail power equipment and system, the electrical aspects of lighting, heating and ventilating, and other electrical phases, especially power phases, of public works construction projects.

Instrumentation and telemetry systems, emergency power supplies, digital-coded data links; solid state alarm systems, control systems for electrical and mechanical systems and equipment, video control and communication systems, application of computer and solid state systems, electronic signals, automatic fare collection system and other electronic transit and related systems.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE OF:

principles and practices of electrical and/or electronic engineering as applied to the design installation, operation and testing of electrical equipment, in the area of specialization.
engineering mathematics and mathematical tables used in electrical engineering, in the area of specialization.
modern construction methods and procedures as applied to the electrical phases of construction projects.
the principles, practices, techniques and instruments used in drafting.

ABILITY TO:

make engineering surveys and secure complete and accurate data required in design work.
learn and apply regulations pertaining to electrical and/or electronic systems and equipment.
prepare and interpret plans, specifications, designs, and estimates for various components of major electrical equipment and systems, in the area of specialization.
make efficiency, acceptance, and other tests of electrical equipment, in the area of specialization.
establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, contractors and the general public,.
prepare concise and comprehensive records and technical progress and research project reports.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 5/83.)

Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university with major course work in electrical engineering.
One year of electrical engineering experience.

Or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience that has included the completion of a bachelor's degree program in an acceptable area of engineering as an educational minimum.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
