ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN 2
(Civil) (Electrical)
(Electronic) (Mechanical)
</nobr>GENERAL DEFINITION
This is engineering technician work at the full performance level, applying established engineering principles and practices, and mathematical knowledge to the completion of the more complex design assignments in support of engineering activities in the area of specialization. Employees in this class perform such tasks as the completion of design assignments, the preparation of standardized specifications for contract inclusion, review of working plans used by contractors and project managers, and the coordination of minor design projects. Work includes rendering drawings, plates, plans, and/or schematics. Employees utilize computer aided drafting and design software (CADD) in support of such assignments, when required. This class is differentiated from the next lower level technician class by performance of the more complex assignments and working with greater independence of action. This class is also differentiated from all other engineering technical support classes by the emphasis upon the application of principles and theories of engineering and higher level mathematics at a level appropriate to assigned engineering tasks. Work is performed under the direction of a technical supervisor.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)
1. The work must be related to, and in support of, the department's engineering design programs.
2. The position must utilize an appropriate level of established engineering principles, theories, and practices, and higher level mathematics in the completion of design tasks and related assignments.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Receives complex assignments in drafting and design review for technical accuracy; prepares and gathers information for plans, layouts, charts, diagrams, schematics, maps, specifications, estimates, and field inspection reports; reviews plans, specifications, correction sheets and other documents for conformity to engineering, departmental, or mandated standards; develops equipment specifications for contract inclusion; develops working plans for contractor use, and project managers on assigned projects.
Utilizes computer aided drafting and design software in rendering such documents as, structural plans, schematics, and drawings; uses algebra and/or trigonometry to solve mathematical problems where there is an unknown; uses standard engineering formulae from higher level mathematics, as required; uses mainframe and/or personal computer terminals to retrieve and enter engineering data.
May use standard computer database, spreadsheet and/or word processing software packages for various aspects of assigned engineering projects; gathers and organizes project specific data items; computes cost estimates and documents project activities, using computer terminals and software systems.
Issues water and sewer permits and provides "one call" utility notification service when applicable.
Uses tools and manuals such as drafting aids, design standards, or testing equipment as required in the area of specialization.
May serve as a project leader for minor engineering projects, coordinating the work of engineering aides and/or lower level technicians; may review the work, and provide technical guidance to lower level technicians and aides; may orient entry level engineers.
Performs related work as required.
Performs the above duties as required in support of civil engineering; work may include projects in such areas as water or sewage distribution, foundations and related structures, roads, transportation facilities and traffic control devices.
Performs the above duties as required in support of electrical engineering; work may include projects in such areas as wired communications, lighting, power transmission and electrical machinery.
Performs the above duties as required in support of electronic engineering; work may include projects in such areas as instrumentation, automation, computerization and communications systems.
Performs the above duties as required in support of mechanical engineering; work may include projects related to the mechanical elements and systems required in plants, public buildings, and structures.
