ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN 1

(Civil)

(Electrical)

(Electronic)

(Mechanical)

GENERAL DEFINITION

This is engineering technician work of moderate scope and complexity applying established engineering principles, practices, and mathematical knowledge to the completion of assigned projects, in support of engineering in area of specialization. Work includes completing design assignments or a portion of a large design project, writing standardized specifications for contract inclusion, rendering plans and drawings, and reviewing working plans and drawings for use by contractors and engineering project managers. Employees in this class use computer aided drafting and design software (CADD), when required, in the rendering of plans, drawings, plates, and schematics. This class is differentiated from all other technical support classes by the emphasis upon the application of the principles and theories of engineering and higher level mathematics at a level appropriate to assigned engineering tasks. Work is performed under the direction of a technical supervisor.

ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

Receives minor design assignments; reviews designs for technical accuracy; prepares or gathers information for plans, layouts, charts, diagrams, schematics, maps, specifications, estimates, and field inspection reports; reviews plans, specifications, correction sheets and other documents for conformity to engineering, architectural or mandated standards; develops equipment specifications for contract inclusion; develops working plans for use by contractors and project managers.

Uses algebra and/or trigonometry to solve mathematical problems where there is an unknown; uses standard engineering formulae from higher level mathematics, as required; applies such information to assigned projects.

May review the work, and give technical guidance to lower level engineering aides; issues water and sewer permits, and provides "one call" utility notification service when applicable.

Utilizes computer-aided drafting and design software in rendering plans, schematics and drawings; uses other tools and manuals, such as drafting aids, established design standards, and mainframe and/or personal computer terminals to enter and retrieve data appropriate to the assigned engineering of specialization.

Performs related work as required.
