ENGINEERING AIDE 1
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is intermediate level engineering aide work of limited scope performing minor engineering or architectural support tasks in a survey corps, traffic control, operations or drafting environment. Employees in this class are responsible for surveying an assigned geographical or residential location, assisting in conducting environmental or traffic studies, researching architectural or drafting records as technical support to engineers and architects or performing a variety of support tasks for an engineering operation. Work includes maintaining conventional and electronic survey equipment and records, or tracing sketches, draft plates, maps, plans, and architectural and engineering drawings, or investigating complaints related to traffic conditions. Work may include continuing to develop skills in the use and applications of computer aided drafting and design (CADD), equipment for drafting efficiency and accuracy and utilizing personal and/or mainframe computer terminals for data entry and retrieval related to a designed task. The work is performed under the supervision of a technical superior.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)
1. Positions in the class must perform intermediate level engineering aide work of limited scope in support of engineering or architectural activities for an operating department.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
All Assignments
Traces, letters, sketches or drafts plates, maps, plans, architectural or engineering drawings of limited complexity, using standard drafting tools and equipment related to the nature of the assignment; maintains files and records of office and field notes; sketches related materials.
Performs minor calculations related to the work assignment or to verify field notations and update records.
Utilizes computer terminals for data entry and retrieval; uses computer aided drafting and design (CADD) equipment, when applicable, as a learning tool.
May drive vehicle as required.
Performs related work as required.
Architectural and Drafting Assignment
Researches records to determine locations, measurements, dimensions or structural composition of water mains, sewers, bridges, highways, processing and traffic signal equipment; assists architects, engineers and higher level engineering aides in the completion of projects and assignments; monitors plant machinery such as valves and electrically-powered screening mechanisms to observe waste water inflows, air drafts and settling tanks.
Issues water and sewer permits and provides "on call" utility notification service when applicable.
Operations Assignment
Prepares preliminary sketches, plans and specifications; may make minor modifications to sketches and plans; performs field inspections to determine if work complies with plans and specifications; reviews blueprint plans for encroachments, driveways and underground utility construction; reviews sketches for street occupancy and street closures; issues street opening permits and provides “one call” utility notification.
Provides technical support on a variety of projects; researches historical records in order to locate plans of problem sites pertinent to project assignments; prepares reports on findings.
Surveying Assignment
Prepares survey area for transit-line by cutting brushes, weeds and removing obstacles, using an axe or brush hook; locates, uncovers or lays survey monuments using digging tools; holds plumb-bob on which transit technician sights bearings; holds level or stadia rod for the taking of transit readings, running of grades, and establishing angles; measures and reads distances, using a standard engineering measuring tape; marks and drives stakes and bench marks; makes rough dimensional sketches showing surveyed areas; takes simple field notes and maintains and cleans equipment; transfers data stored in electronic survey equipment to personal and/or mainframe computer terminals.
Traffic Assignment
Tours an assigned section to observe existing traffic regulatory and control signs, signals and markings for malfunctions, need, damage, and inaccuracy, etc.; investigates complaints relative to traffic conditions; observes traffic field conditions; prepares area sketches as required showing physical features and tape measurements; makes recommendations to alleviate traffic problems.
