TRIAL SERVICES MANAGER
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is administrative support work directing and coordinating the provision of services
to prosecuting attorneys. The employee in this class supervises through subordinate supervisors
a staff of clerical employees engaged in processing and preparing legal forms and case folders
used in trial proceedings and providing other clerical services necessary to the prosecution of
criminal cases. Contact with defense attorneys, court officials, and the general public is an
important aspect of the work. Work is performed under the general direction of an
administrative superior.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Directs through subordinate supervisors the activities of a large clerical staff providing
a variety of support services to prosecuting attorneys; plans, assigns and reviews the work of
a staff engaged in reviewing arrest files, issuing subpoenas, and controlling and issuing files to
prosecuting attorneys; analyzes trial listing operations to identify problem areas; formulates
recommendations and prepares reports detailing methods of improving operations through
expanded programs, procedural changes, intensified training of personnel, and the application
of electronic data processing equipment and techniques to work processes.
- Devises systematic approaches to the implementation of procedural changes dictated by
modification in court policy or revisions in state law; confers with attorneys, representatives of
the courts, and police employees to coordinate the implementation of new policies and
procedures.
- Coordinates the transfer of cases to different trial listing sections; assures that legal
documents are properly coded for input into data processing systems; confers with assistant
district attorneys to coordinate the listing of cases and to ensure that case folders are properly
prepared; consults with court officials, defense attorneys, defendants, and witnesses to reassign
and confirm trial dates and courtrooms; reviews trial dates and courtroom assignments to ensure
proper distribution of cases and sufficient preparation time; monitors changes in trial schedules
in order to alert appropriate personnel.
- Researches complex listing problems; suggests alternate research avenues to subordinate
staff; acts as a liaison with other law enforcement agencies to facilitate compliance with speedy
trial and discovery rules; intervenes with and explains to witnesses the trial process.
- Determines what information can be released on a case to non-law enforcement agencies;
reviews written requests for information; instructs staff to release specific data and documents;
corresponds with requesters, explaining the rules, statutes, and related issues governing such
release.

efficiency of trial support services.

departmental units.

- establish and maintain effective working relationships with judicial and law enforcement
officials, defense attorneys and their clients, and the general public.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement
represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based
on training and experience requirements as approved on 5/87.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
- Seven years of experience in clerical work, four years of which have been in the
preparation and processing of legal forms and case folders for use by trial attorneys including
two years supervising clerical employees engaged in such work.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable
by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
