GENERAL DEFINITION
This is full performance stores work receiving, storing, issuing and ordering equipment, materials, parts, supplies
and a variety of items in the specialty area. Employees perform a storekeeping function in a departmental stores area.
Work involves medium to heavy physical effort and may entail unpleasant working conditions.

- Employees in this class must perform a storekeeping function in a departmental stores area in one of the specialty
areas.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Both Specialties

Orders materials, equipment, parts and supplies; reviews computerized work history database, contract
expenditures and previous purchase data; identifies parts requested using diagrams, schematics, and parts manuals; cross-
references part numbers for accurate parts order; places orders with vendor or generates purchase order; enters order data
into computerized inventory system; contacts vendors to expedite deliveries; prepares status reports of items on order.
- Maintains computerized stock records for items received, orders filled, and items used; prepares periodic progress
reports; searches departmental database for availability of items at other stores locations; maintains bin tags and perpetual
inventory records of goods received and issued; takes physical inventory by counting items on hand.
- Receives supplies; unloads, unpacks and places goods and supplies in assigned locations; counts, sorts or weighs
incoming articles to verify receipt of items on requisition or purchase order; examines received supplies to verify
conformance to specifications; operates materials handling equipment such as the fork lift to move heavy items about
stores area as required.
- Stores items in bins, on floor, or on shelves, according to identifying information, such as style, size or type of
material; approves receiving reports; enters date on materials received into computer; generates report to user regarding
receipt of materials; arranges transport and storage of non-stock items.
- Cleans stores area and keeps stock in order; delivers or picks up parts and supplies as required.
- Performs related work as required.
Automotive Parts
- Receives, stores, issues and orders a variety of automotive parts, tools and supplies such as carburetors,
alternators, radiators, pumps, batteries, brakes, drivelinks, rear ends, transmissions, differentials, compressors, and
welding, diagnostic and computerized test equipment; determines proper part number for item requested by cross
referencing shop manuals, diagrams, parts manuals and catalogs, or by accessing inventory, parts data or other
information through the use of a computer terminal; contacts authorized vendors for price and availability of parts, as
necessary.
General Commodities
- Receives, stores, issues and orders a variety of construction, maintenance, office, cleaning and general commodity
items such as paper, pens, pencils, brooms, mops, cleaning fluids, janitorial supplies, plywood, copiers and computers;
references catalogs for part numbers; phones vendors for cost and other data.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- principles and practices of receiving, storing and issuing materials, supplies and equipment.
- the use of a variety of materials parts and supplies in the specialty area.
- automotive shop and parts manuals for the Automotive specialty, and general commodity catalogs and parts
manuals for the General Commodities specialty.
- the methods and procedures involved in taking inventory.
- purchase and requisition procedures.
- basic computer data entry and retrieval techniques.
ABILITY TO:
- read and understand parts and supplies manuals.
- make varied arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy.
- maintain and prepare records of materials received, ordered, and issued.
- learn the operation of a fork lift truck and other stores moving equipment if required by work assignment.
- learn to operate and utilize specialized inventory software systems.
- read and understand diagrams and schematic blueprints.
- lift and move heavy objects.
- carry out oral and written instructions.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training
and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates
for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 1/96.)
EDUCATION
- Completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
EXPERIENCE
Automotive Parts
- One year of experience receiving, storing, issuing or ordering automotive or truck equipment, materials, parts
and supplies in a computerized parts inventory environment.
NOTE:
Current certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in the automotive
parts specialty area may be substituted for the general experience requirement.
General Commodities
- One year of experience receiving, storing, issuing or ordering equipment, materials, parts and supplies.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Stores Worker if required by work assignment.
