AIRPORT COMPUTER SYSTEMS ANALYST
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is systems and applications programming work in the operation and maintenance of
a computer system characterized by hardware based fault tolerance using duplex logic and
hardware components and VOS operating system. The employee in this class maintains
application software programs, develops and integrates new application programs designed to
support airport activities, and enhances, monitors, and maintains operating system efficiency.
The employee serves as a department's sole systems and applications programmer. Work is
performed under the direction of an administrative superior.
ALLOCATING FACTORS:
(The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)
- This is a one position class in the Philadelphia Airport.
- The employee must perform systems and applications programming for a Stratus or
comparable computer system.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Provides operating system and applications programming support for a computer system
designed with built-in checking and diagnostic aides to provide continuous on-line service for
Airport operations and activities such as flight information display, message paging, and access
control to restricted areas of the aviation facility.
- Maintains computer operating systems, including system security and access; installs,
tests, evaluates and modifies databases/telecommunications network operating systems, and
general purpose programs or utilities; monitors usage and performance efficiency of computer
system hardware and software components such as central processing units, disk and tape drives
and controllers; implement configuration changes; analyzes computer system malfunctions for
technical software or configuration control problems; controls, allocates and manages system
libraries and files; participates in new hardware and software planning.
- Maintains applications software programs written in COBOL; develops and integrates
new applications programs; meets with users, managers and supervisors to discuss requests and
user objectives; develops systems logic and flow charts; designs database file, screen layout and
record number and size; designs program logic to meet specifications and standards; codes
program in appropriate language and enters test data to check program; meets with users to
identify problems; writes technical documentation and narrative explanations of program;
prepares forms and documentation; troubleshoots existing programs to identify and correct
problems; develops and recommends enhancements to applications programs.
- Evaluates compatibility of new peripheral equipment with existing systems; oversees
purchase, installation and integration of peripheral equipment; evaluates new software for effect
on system performance; maintains documentation of system parameters and changes to standard
software.
- Performs related work as required.
