This is entry-level information technology work. Employees are assigned to work in several areas of technology and are expected to increase their knowledge to assist in the analysis, design, implementation, operation and technical support of one or more Information Technology functions, such as Operations, Technical Support, Data Networking, Telecommunications, Local and Wide Area Networks, User Support, Applications Development, Systems Design, Data Base Design, GIS, Website, Maintenance of Existing Applications and Systems and Business Analysis. Employees develop expertise and specialize in one or more of the above areas or function as an Information Technology Generalist prior to promotion to the full performance level. Employees are supervised by a technical supervisor.

1. Employees must work in assigned areas of information technology and are expected to increase their knowledge to assist in the analysis, design, implementation, operation and technical support of one or more Information Technology functions.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
All Assignments and functional areas:
Under the direction of more senior-level Information Technology staff, completes a variety of developmental assignments in various Information Technology functions; Develops and enhances knowledge of area being supported; Continues professional development and enhances personal skills through on-the-job training and attending classroom and in-house training.
Keeps abreast of the latest developments in information technology to insure that the latest procedures are incorporated in work; Learns the City’s Solution Development Lifecycle (SDLC) processes; Reads manuals, periodicals, and technical reports to learn ways to meet user requirements; Maintains knowledge of all applications and operating systems through training and educational opportunities.
Participates in the evaluation of user requests to determine feasibility, cost and time required, compatibility with current system, and computer capabilities; Participates in user consultations to gather information about needs, objectives, functions, features, and input and output requirements; Performs background analysis through interviews and research; Develops system, application and work-flow documentation.
Works independently or in collaboration with others to implement Information Technology solutions or resolve production problems; Investigates and researches problems via online resources, technical materials and vendor support.
Participates in the development of specifications for projects, provides manager with project completion estimates and makes recommendations for resources needed;
Learns to analyze, define, and document requirements for data, workflow, logical processes, hardware and operating system environment, interfaces with other systems, internal and external checks and controls, and outputs.
Reviews new concepts in hardware, programming systems and applications development that can provide business solutions or significant advances and improvements in processing or end products; Participates in the analysis of needs for new functions and software applications and recommends changes to existing functions and software applications.
Tests new software and hardware products to ensure compliance with vendor guarantees and client expectations and to determine their compatibility with products currently in use.
Participates in vendor communication regarding installations, problems and resolutions; Participates in development of test plans through final acceptance testing; Performs or assists with special projects and participates on project teams; Acts as backup for other functions in the department.
May be subject to call-in or required to respond on short notice to assist with Information Technology related emergencies; May require temporary assignment to, or frequent travel between, various locations and/or vendor sites.
Contacts internal clients, co-workers and management, and must at all times act as a professional representative of the department.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
· Current applicable software and/or operating systems.
· Personal Computer / Network system practices
· Microsoft (or comparable) Office Products used by the City, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
· Internet tools such as Telnet, and FTP

· Computer languages if required by assignment
· Data Base Design, data normalization and relational data base concepts.
SKILL IN:
· Use of personal computer software.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards that will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 5/13.)
EDUCATION:
Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university with major course work in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems Management or a closely related field.
NOTES:
1. Current city employees with two years of experience as a Computer User Support Specialist, Network Support Associate, Network Support Specialist or a comparable class immediately preceding the date on which examination eligibility is determined who have completed any bachelor’s degree program will satisfy all requirements.
2. For applicants with no Information Technology experience, the specified bachelor’s degree program must have been completed no more than four years prior to the date on which examination eligibility is determined.
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
