ELECTRONIC PRINTING SUPERVISOR
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is supervisory electronic printing work utilizing a Xerox 9700 electronic printer in
the City's central computing agency. The employee in this class is responsible for preparing
print specifications, reviewing user requests for printed forms, planning, assigning, and
reviewing the work of a subordinate programmer, and establishing the most cost-effective
method for creating special designs for reproduction in the electronic printing environment.
Interacting effectively with users to review criteria for form change and redesign, maintaining
software libraries, and reporting printing costs are significant to the work. Work is performed
under the direction of a technical superior.
ALLOCATING FACTORS:
(The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)
- Only one position can be allocated to this class.
- This position must supervise the entire Forms Design Unit for P.C.C.
- This position must supervise at least one programmer.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Receives and reviews requests for special print designs; confers with, and serves as
liaison for, requestors in determining feasibility and needs in accordance with established City
standards; serves as technical advisor on electronic print design projects.
- Ensures that production schedules, goals and standards are met; rearranges job orders to
meet critical deadlines; interacts with users to determine deadlines; coordinates with operations
supervisor, a schedule for projects to regulate the flow of input and meet expected deadlines;
prioritizes print projects; determines input and output times; monitors print and design operations
while in progress and upon completion.
- Develops printing specifications; utilizes a terminal connected to printer to create or
change forms; writes printing or form specifications using Print or Form Description languages;
ensures that printer and terminal operating procedures are followed; updates in-house or
vendor-supplied software to meet user needs; installs new software products for forms designs
or print control; reviews output during and after design or print runs to ensure accuracy and
efficient operation and production.
- Plans, assigns and reviews the work of a subordinate programmer engaged in designing
print specifications for printing or forms design projects; instructs subordinate in terminal use,
print and design control language and procedures, forms design related to electronic printing,
and procedures for data input; tests subordinates' completed specifications and projects; directs
subordinates to work towards meeting production goals and deadlines; instructs subordinates in
departmental and administrative policies and standards.
- Maintains printing and design specification programs; updates programs as needed;
maintains libraries of printing and forms design software; maintains backup files of programs
and data on magnetic tape.
- Interacts with requestors to establish the best cost effective method for completing
electronic printing projects; compiles costs of printing projects; determines costs of paper, ink,
and other supplies; submits costs to supervisor.
- Determines causes of printing problems, devises solutions to those problems; implements
solutions or refers problems to contracted vendors for resolution.
- Monitors vendor compliance to warranty and maintenance contract stipulations; prepares
reports describing vendors' performance.
- Reviews vendors' brochures, newsletters and trade journals concerning new hardware and
software packages; determines feasibility of acquiring new products; makes recommendations
concerning new equipment to superiors.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the principles, practices and procedures of data processing operations.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement
represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based
on training and experience requirements as approved on 8/92).
EDUCATION:
- Education equivalent to the twelfth school grade and formal training in DOS/VSE, VM,
and MVS job control language and VM/CMS editor or their equivalents supplemented
by formal training in the programming and operation of the Xerox 9700 Electronic
Printing System.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
- Four years of experience performing para-professional data processing work monitoring
and controlling production and/or supporting programming activities.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:
- One year of experience utilizing programming skills to design and format print projects
on a Xerox 9700 electronic printer.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable
by the Personnel Department which has included completion of formal training in printing
specification writing and operation of Xerox electronic printing equipment, and the specific
experience listed above.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
