DATA ENTRY OPERATOR II
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is complex data entry work on a computer terminal. An employee in this class
operates a computer terminal keyboard, performing rapid and accurate keying of the more
complex coded and uncoded alpha-numeric data for entry into an electronic computing system.
Work includes off-line key to tape, key to magnetic disc, and performing on line direct data
entry to and retrieval from a computing system database. Work also includes occasional
assignments to the operation of related data processing and storage equipment. Verifying
completed data entry assignments for accuracy and completeness is a significant aspect of the
work. This class is differentiated from all other classes by the responsibility for keying data to
designated data fields for entry into the data base of an electronic computer system. Work is
performed under the supervision of a technical superior.
ALLOCATING FACTORS:
(The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)
- The position must perform off line key to tape, key to magnetic disc and on line
direct data entry in a departmental alpha-numeric data entry unit.
- The position must perform complex alpha-numeric data entry assignments using
the keyboard of a computer terminal device.
- The position must be responsible for keying data to designated data fields and
formats on the computer terminal screen display.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Reviews contents of source documents to determine if data is error free before
performing alpha-numeric data entry assignments; organizes and arranges source documents for
data entry; operates a computer terminal keyboard to enter coded and uncoded data for storage
on magnetic internal discs and tapes or transmits data directly to the data base of the host
computer; keys data into the proper fields and formats on screen displays; sets system to the
entry mode, using keyboard entry indicator key; performs off-line data entry batch work on
single copy; performs on-line data entry and off-line key to disc, key to tape job entry; verifies
alpha-numeric codes and source document data entered on discs, tapes or data in the mainframe
data base for accuracy and completeness; uses key to disc system program language to make
corrections to entered data; deletes, inserts, examines and updates data keyed to discs and tapes;
inputs data from computer tapes submitted by departments to magnetic discs for storage; boots
system to generate the send mode for data base transmissions; verifies off-line batch work and
on-line data base transmissions; retrieves information on specific items in batch or the entire
batch entered on disc and data from information transmitted to the data base.
- Verifies operator production levels and error rate, such as the number of gross and net
keystrokes, number of corrections made and number of minutes to complete job.
- May perform routine clerical work in relation to data entry and verification activities;
maintains files for source documents and taping reference and compiles reports.
- May operate related data processing equipment.
- May log in and out all data entry work.
- May maintain files and compile reports.
- Performs related work as required.
