TRIAL SERVICES SUPERVISOR
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is supervisory work planning, assigning, and coordinating the activities of a staff
engaged in the provision of clerical support services including the preparation of case folders,
legal forms, and records necessary for listing cases for trial and use by trial attorneys. Work
includes planning work assignments and work schedules, coordinating clerical activities with
other functions of the District Attorney's Office, and analyzing the effectiveness of existing work
methods. Conferring with assistant district attorneys and contact with court officials and
representatives of law enforcement agencies are significant to the work. An employee in this
class reports to an administrative superior.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Plans work assignments for a staff of personnel engaged in listing major, minor and routine cases for trial, or for arraignment hearings; supervises the preparation, maintenance or
filing of case records for assistant district attorneys; ensures that files resulting from disposed cases are properly catalogued and stored; arranges for destruction of case files based upon a time table established by the administration; ensures the proper preparation and processing of witness subpoenas, registers, and the provision of related witness services; prepares work schedules so that lead-time priority dates are met; arranges staff assignments to cover work load requirements; answers a variety of questions concerning operating procedures; determines that
established trial listing and other record keeping procedures are being implemented by subordinate staff; ensures that postponed hearings are re-listed; orients new employees in the operations and functions of the unit; trains new employees in trial listing procedures.
- Coordinates one of the trial listing functions with other trial listing functions and the activities of other departmental sections as well as with other law enforcement and judicial agencies and bodies; answers a variety of inquiries regarding case listings to defendants, witnesses, defense attorneys and other interested parties; confers with assistant district attorneys concerning such things as the issuance of subpoenas and trial postponement.
- Analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of existing work methods, makes recommendations for the modification of present methods and procedures in order that the quality and
quantity of work output may be improved; establishes new procedures and methods as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- office practices, methods and procedures involved in the clerical processing of cases for trial.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject
applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 8/1984.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
- Five years of experience in clerical work, two years of which have been in the preparation and processing of legal forms and case folders for use by trial attorneys, or two years of which have been supervising the work activities of clerical employees engaged in the retrieval, filing, and processing of case files for use by trial attorneys.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
