CLERK STENOGRAPHER II
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is stenographic and moderately complex clerical work.
Employees in this class are all responsible for recording and transcribing of
dictation, but principal emphasis is upon the difficulty of, and responsibility involved, in
the related clerical work.
Work is performed under the close supervision of an administrative or clerical
superior. Assignments are stable in nature and are carried out in accordance with
instructions and established routines.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Takes and transcribes dictation on correspondence, articles, reports, or other
materials; takes shorthand notes on proceedings and transcribes for superior's review.
- Composes and types answers to routine requests for information; types a variety
of reports and specifications, tabulations, and similar material.
- Interviews visitors; answers complaints or questions relating to departmental
operations; assists in filling out forms and applications; gives out information on
departmental services and functions; arranges appointments; receives complaints.
- Operates common office appliances.
- May supervise a small group of subordinate clerk typists and clerk stenographers
by determining and making work assignments, and checking work upon completion.
- Compiles reports, forms, and summaries, frequently checking against a variety of
records in order to secure complete and accurate information.
- Takes and transcribes verbatim statements or conference minutes as an occasional
part of assignment.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- business English, spelling and punctuation.
- office practices, methods, and appliances.
ABILITY TO:
- type from clear copy and to take dictation at a speed level and within accuracy
limits established to determine typing and stenographic skills.
- maintain departmental clerical records and to prepare reports from such records.
- make arithmetic computations and tabulations rapidly and accurately.
- compose routine letters and memoranda without dictation.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement
represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit
or reject applicants for tests.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the tenth school grade.
- One year of experience as a stenographer.
- Completion of a two year post-high school business course may be substituted for
the one year of experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
