Swanson Street Public Meeting Will Provide Updated Project Information and Public Feedback Opportunities
April 8 Open House will feature project exhibits and new corridor improvement plans
PHILADELPHIA – The Department of Streets invites the public to attend an in-person public meeting for the Swanson Street Reconstruction Project on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The meeting will take place at the 2300 Arena (2300 South Swanson Street, Philadelphia, PA 19148).
The meeting will provide an opportunity for community members to learn about project status and provide feedback on planned improvements. The meeting will follow an open-house format, allowing attendees to visit at their convenience during the scheduled time. No formal presentation will be given.
Project Overview
The Swanson Street Reconstruction Project seeks to improve safety and mobility for all roadway users, whether they choose to walk, bike, or drive. Currently, Swanson Street’s aging infrastructure, deteriorated roadway and sidewalks, inconsistent traffic patterns, and unclear pavement markings can be confusing for drivers and uncomfortable for people walking or biking. Reconstructing the corridor between Oregon Avenue and Christopher Columbus Boulevard will include improvements for all modes of travel.
Planned Elements & Community Benefits
Roadway & Traffic Improvements
- Swanson Street will be reconstructed between Oregon Avenue and Christopher Columbus Boulevard, along with new curbs and improved drainage systems.
- A traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Swanson Street and Snyder Avenue, replacing the existing four-way stop.
Pedestrian & Bicycle Improvements
- New wider sidewalks will be constructed along the corridor, reducing the amount of time it takes for pedestrians to cross the street.
- A two-way dedicated bicycle path will be constructed at sidewalk level along the west side of Swanson Street from Oregon Avenue to Snyder Avenue.
- A shared-use path will be constructed at the sidewalk level along the west side of Swanson Street from Snyder Avenue to Mifflin Street.
Anticipated Project Timing
The project is currently in the design phase, which will continue through 2026. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2027.
