Department of Streets Announces Construction to Begin on the Roxborough Avenue Stairway Project
Stair Closure and Construction to Begin April 1, 2025
PHILADELPHIA – Streets Commissioner Kristin Del Rossi announced today that mobilization of construction activities will begin on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, for the Roxborough Avenue Stairway Reconstruction Project. The stairway, located between Terrace Street and Boone Street, will be closed to the public on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. The stair closure is expected to be in place until October 2025.
The project involves the demolition and removal of the existing stairway and selected piers; replacement of selected piers; repair of existing piers; replacement of concrete stair treads with steel stair treads; repair of the Boone Street Retaining Wall; regrading portions of Boone Street; and other, related construction activities.
From the week of April 7, 2025, through the week of May 12, 2025, road users can expect intermittent closures of the intersections of Roxborough Avenue and Terrace Avenue; Roxborough Avenue and Boone Street; and Boone Street at the mid-stairway entrance. These closures will allow for demolition of the staircase and will be in place from 7:00AM to 4:00PM on weekdays, as operations require. Detour signage will be posted for navigation around the work area.
Work will be performed by the contractor, Athena Contracting, Inc. The Roxborough Avenue Stairway is expected to be reopened by October of 2025. The value of the construction contract is $1.3M and is being funded using City Capital funds.
The Department of Streets thanks the citizens in advance for their patience and cooperation during the upcoming construction phase.
