City Announces Bridge Lane Closures on Upper Spring Garden Bridge for Work on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive Bridge Rehabilitation Project
Single Lane Bridge Closures and Construction Activities to Take Place at Night
PHILADELPHIA – Kristin Del Rossi, Streets Commissioner, announced today that a single lane closure of the Upper Spring Garden Street Bridge will occur during nighttime hours between 9:00PM and 5:00AM starting Monday, March 24th and running through the next two weeks, on weekdays only. A bridge lane closure with flaggers directing traffic will be used on Upper Spring Garden Street Bridge between the I-76 On/Off Ramps and Art Museum Drive to pour a section of concrete deck of the below Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive Bridge via a concrete pump truck. This operation will bring Upper Spring Garden Street Bridge down to one vehicular travel lane in this area. Pedestrians and cyclists will not be affected. The bridge closure is anticipated for one to two nights in the proposed date range, weather dependent.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive Bridge Project involves the demolition and removal of the existing concrete bridge deck and barriers, and the construction of a new composite concrete bridge deck, barriers and railing, as well as rehabilitation work on the bridge superstructure and substructure, painting of the steel girders, roadway approach work, street lighting, ADA curb ramps, and other miscellaneous construction.
Reconstruction of the bridge was awarded to the contractor, Haines & Kibblehouse, Inc. Construction is expected to be completed by the fall of 2025. The value of the construction contract is $20.1M and is being fully funded using Federal Dollars.
The Department of Streets will make every effort to minimize disruption to traffic but encourages road users to plan ahead and use alternative routes when traveling in this area. The Department of Streets thanks residents and travelers in advance for their patience and cooperation as we work to improve city streets.
