PHILADELPHIA — Streets Commissioner Kristin Del Rossi announced today that construction will commence on Chestnut Street (SR 3) between Cobbs Creek Parkway and South 43rd Street as part of the Chestnut Street Pedestrian Refuge Islands Project the week of March 10, 2025.

The scope of this project includes the removal of existing plastic delineator posts and construction of concrete islands in the bicycle lane buffer areas at multiple intersections along Chestnut Street in West Philadelphia, including:

  • 62nd Street
  • 61st Street
  • 60th Street
  • 59th Street
  • 58th Street
  • 57th Street
  • 56th Street
  • 55th Street
  • 52nd Street
  • 46th Street
  • 45th Street
  • 43rd Street

Construction will take place in phases over the course of the project to limit impact to vehicles and pedestrians. Work is expected to be completed by fall of 2025. The construction contract has been awarded to Road-Con, Inc. The value of the contract is just over $1 million and is being funded using federal funds.

“These concrete islands improve visibility for everyone at an intersection, whether you are walking, biking, or driving,” said Streets Commissioner Kristin Del Rossi. “This is a lasting investment in the community.”

While the Department of Streets will make every effort to minimize disruption to traffic, roadway users should be aware of construction activities and follow all posted traffic controls while traveling through the project area. The Department of Streets thanks residents in advance for their patience and cooperation as the Department works to improve city streets.
