PHILADELPHIA — Mayor Cherelle L. Parker today reaffirmed Philadelphia’s role as the birthplace of America by announcing the City is making major investments in the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026. To date, the City has committed nearly $60 million through its general fund to support the development and successful execution of events in 2026, as well as half a billion dollars in investments through its Aviation Fund to prepare Philadelphia International Airport to welcome millions of visitors from around the globe.

The funding will support a slate of high-profile civic and city-wide initiatives, from major global events such as 2026 FIFA World Cup, MLB All-Star Game, and the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps 250th anniversary, to community initiatives, including neighborhood-centered activations and expanded Independence Day festivities.

“2026 is not just a year for Philadelphia—it’s a defining opportunity to highlight our city’s passion and unwavering spirit on the global stage,” said Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. “Over the past year, my administration has collaborated with community leaders, businesses, cultural institutions, and countless others to ensure Philadelphia is prepared to seize this historic opportunity for our city and our nation. We’re committed to ensuring Philly is ready to welcome the world.”

This commitment will bolster Philadelphia’s preparations for the nation’s Semiquincentennial celebrations and showcase Philadelphia as a global destination that puts its residents at the heart of the celebration. The investment will:

Deliver a World-Class Experience for Visitors and Residents
The City is investing more than $30 million to support organizations, host events, drive marketing and other initiatives. This includes:

  • Supporting visitor attraction efforts to boost economic activity.
  • Empowering commercial corridors to benefit from anticipated increased tourism.
  • Investing in Lemon Hill, site of the 2026 FIFA Fanfest, while creating lasting benefits for the local community.

Ensure Safety for Visitors and Residents
The City is investing $28 million in public safety investments to ensure everyone has a safe, memorable experience. This includes:

  • Public safety equipment and training to ensure enhanced preparedness.
  • Market Street Old City Improvement Project, which includes roadway upgrades to increase safety and accessibility to the historic corridor including a new pedestrian plaza ahead of anticipated tourism boost in 2026.
  • Cleaning, greening and beautification efforts across Philadelphia.

Invest in Philadelphia’s Future through Capital Improvements
Critical investments​ to enhance facilities for the millions of visitors that Philadelphia International Airport is anticipated to welcome in 2026 and beyond. This includes:

  • Passenger experience improvements, including investments in restrooms, terminal hold rooms and SEPTA platforms.
  • Technological improvements, including investments in signage and security.
  • Landside improvements, including investments in garages, façades, and roadways.
  • Airfield improvements, including investments towards apron, taxiways, and runways.

The Parker Administration anticipates discussing further proposed investments as part of the upcoming budget process.
