Every year at the end of winter, sugar makers tap maple trees to collect sap. Tree sap contains nutrients and minerals. Maple tree sap is not only unique to North America, but it also has a high sugar content. By boiling the sap, this produces maple sugar and syrup. Five gallons of sap will boil down to one pint of syrup, or about one pound of sugar.

Maple sugaring season runs through February and March. The Pennypack Environmental Center is hosting a Sugaring Kick-Off on January 25, 2025.

Come celebrate maple sugaring season with maple themed crafts, stories, workshops, and more.

Want to learn more about maple sugaring? Then attend one of Parks & Rec’s environmental education centers’ maple sugar events. Environmental Centers will also host educational activities for youth and older adults. At these sweet events you can learn how to:

  • Identify a maple tree.
  • Tap a sugar maple tree.
  • Harvest the sap.
  • Boil the sap.
  • Create maple syrup and candy.
