Bridge closure and construction to begin January 13, 2025

PHILADELPHIA – Streets Commissioner, Kristin Del Rossi, announced today that the existing Hunting Park Avenue Bridge, located between Whitaker Avenue and G Street, will be closed to vehicular traffic on Monday, January 13, 2025, to commence construction on the Hunting Park Avenue Bridge Removal and Fill-In Project.

The scope of this project includes the demolition and removal of the bridge superstructure and portions of its substructure, backfilling the existing bridge area with earth fill, and removal and replacement of the roadway cross-section. Utility relocation, the installation of right-of-way fencing and pavement markings on Hunting Park Avenue, roadway resurfacing, and other related miscellaneous construction are also included in this project scope.

The Streets Construction Unit will coordinate with the property and business owners adjacent to the bridge to acquire their working times and hours of operation, with the intent to maintain access possible to their properties with minimal disruptions.

Advance signage will be in place on or before December 30, 2024, announcing the anticipated bridge closure. Once construction starts, the bridge will be completely closed to all vehicular traffic but will remain open only to pedestrian traffic via staging of construction activities. Detour signs will be posted to direct motorists around the worksite, as follows:

  • Eastbound vehicular traffic will be redirected from Hunting Park Avenue, using Southbound Whitaker Avenue, to Eastbound Luzerne Street, onto Northbound G Street and back to Hunting Park Avenue
  • Westbound vehicular traffic will be redirected from Hunting Park Avenue, using Southbound G Street, to Westbound Luzerne Street, onto Northbound Whitaker Avenue and back to Hunting Park Avenue

Please take note of temporary “No Parking” signs that may be posted in the area for specific construction dates. We ask that you abide by posted parking restrictions so that vehicles are not towed. In the event a car is towed, please contact the local Police District to determine its location. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when travelling around the work areas.

Work will be performed by the bridge contractor, South State Inc. This project is expected to be completed by Fall 2025. The value of the construction contract is $1.7M and is being funded using a combination of State Act 13 and City Capital funds.

The Streets Construction Unit will coordinate with the property and business owners adjacent to the bridge to acquire their working times and hours of operation, with the intent to possibly maintain access to their properties with minimal disruptions.
